How To Become A California Certified Family Law Specialist?

The 2023 Legal Specialist Examination results were sent via email on March 15, 2024, to the preferred email address identified on the Admissions Applicant Portal. If you passed the exam, you have until April 26, 2025, to submit your results. The Legal Specialist Examination consists of eight short essay questions and 75 multiple-choice questions, tests whether an attorney has a proficient understanding of key laws, rules, and procedures applicable to family law.

To become a certified family law specialist in California, an attorney must be evaluated by judges and other attorneys familiar with their work. To maintain certification, a certified specialist must comply with strict requirements set by the State Bar of California, including a minimum of five years of practice in family law, completed at least 45 hours of approved continuing education in family law topics every three years, and pass a written examination in family law.

To become a Certified Family Law Specialist (CFLS), an attorney must meet stringent requirements, such as having been practicing family law extensively for at least five years, complete at least 45 hours of approved continuing education in family law topics every three years, and pass a written examination in family law.

To become a certified specialist, an attorney must register and prepare for the Legal Specialist Examination, gain experience, complete education, and secure references, either before or after the examination. The general requirements to become a certified specialist include passing a written examination in the legal specialty area, practiced law, being an active member in good standing of the State Bar of California, passing a written examination covering California Family Law, and having substantial involvement in the practice of family law.

A State Bar-approved course will satisfy the entire educational requirement for Family Law Specialist certification (or recertification). Past attendees can also apply for the exam.
