The footage taken in 2014 above was far, far different than the reality of the last few years Glen spent on this earth. In this last year, he could no longer play guitar, formulate tangible sentences or connect in a meaningful way with his family. Alzheimers truly is the long goodbye and Alice Cooper put it so beautifully this week when asked about Glen’s passing. He said it was “a relief” for Glen and his family that this cruel disease could no longer ravage his life. We know where he is; he is home now….and free.
Music is amazing. I sang in a barbershop quartet for years and we performed often at rest homes. There would be people bedridden just staring blankly at the ceiling and who didn’t know their own names yet when we would start singing songs of their youth their eyes would light up, smiling from ear to ear and they would make definite eye contact. And some of them who hadn’t spoke intelligible words for months or even years would start singing along and hardly missing a lyric. And even though some of them had been very difficult and combative residents with the staff pretty much all of them wanted to hug us and some would beg us not to leave them. That was difficult but I’ve always liked old folks anyway so got a particularly special joy from those experiences.
Never will another entertainer be as diverse or who brings so much to the music industry as Glen Campbell. I love anything he ever wrote or sang. Who knew he played bagpipes perfectly too? What a legacy this man leaves behind. If you disagree with me then make sure that you do your homework and look up Glen Campbell’s life. You will be very surprised.

I’m serious, but in 1967 I took my gf to see him at a small nightclub in New York City. That was the year right before he exploded on the music scene. We were sitting really up close. I can’t describe the feeling that came over me a year later. I felt as if I actually knew him. I bought every album he put out, and watched him rise into stardom including the movies. I wish I could remember the name of that little nightclub.
My jr high music teacher had alzheimer’s my sister and noticed she was at the same nursing home our grandfather was in at the time. Well my sister just loved her so much and asked is she could go in and visit. The nurses said yes my sister knelt down and quietly talked to her and she began to sing, boy what a beautiful treat that was she had a great voice.
R.I.P. dearest Glen. I was a caregiver for my beloved Mom, who also went to Heaven, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. It is so hard and sad, to watch your loved one, decline day by day, with this horrible disease. God be with, and heal all of Glen’s family members and friends. Had the great pleasure of meeting Debbie and her dad, Glenn Campbell, out in New Zealand in 2007, had a nice chat for about ten minutes with Glenn, he was a big gentle man who was easy to talk to, I had my photo taken with him, and he gave me four of his used guitar plextrums, which I still have to this day. I introduced myself to him, and told him I was Ken from Wales UK. He knew Wales from his long friendship with singer Tom Jones. What a chance meeting with a true superstar, I was saddened by his illness and death. Rip Glenn Campbell and thanks for giving me some of your time, and a great memory. You top the list of celebrities I have met on my journey through life. ♥️
While the article is touching to watch, the title is inaccurate, Glen was not in his final days yet – he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011, entered the facility in 2014 but did not pass away till 2017, at which point he would have been unable to even perform basic functions, much less play guitar. He would have been in the late first stage to early middle stage in the article, when the symptoms were already evident but he could still participate in daily activities with assistance. Speaking from experience as a worker in an aged care centre with a high proportion of dementia residents.
The first time I cried listening to music, 6yrs old 1968, riding in a camper on a trip with family late late at night on hwy 10 heading East close to Cali Arizona border and Every time still to this day I hear Glenn. 😢😢 I’m fighting them back now!😢😢It doesn’t matter what song it is. You left a huge responsibility behind to have the work ethic drive and love if country music and keeping it going. And you left us all those wonderful songs that I will never stop listening to or forget as a singer I learn something new every time I put on a Glenn Campbell record he and Jerry Reed were my favorites. His daughter Ashley is carrying on his legacy with her own career and style that you can see that god gifted talent that reminds us of people like her dad. She will be a big star in her own right. I had the good fortune to “play” his Ovation 6-string guitar at Ontario Place some 40 years ago while working a summer job for a sound equipment rental company (I snuck a few chords in just to be able to say I did, hoping nobody would chew me out). He had sprained his wrist and it was wrapped up pretty good, but he played flawlessly that night. One of the all-time great artists.
I wish my mom could have held on to her ability to play the piano. She was a little girl when she learned, she was our church’s organist for 50 years, but from her age of 82, give or take a year, she didn’t even know what a piano was or what it was used for. I felt the pain of this family from the first report of Glen’s Alz. and my heart grieves for them just like we did with my mom.

For me listening to rock and roll all the time I did not realize what a great singer Glen Campbell is. This song Wichita Lineman is the most beautiful song I ever heard in my life. This Alzheimer’s disease ain’t no joke like a people joke about it. I took care of my mom for years 24 hours a day 7 days a week every day of the year. I am her sibling and I have a 50% greater chance of getting it then your average individual. Now my brother has it and the Alzheimers Association told me they said mail it is when I will get it not that my chances increased the percentage they should have never told me that I think of it every day. But hopefully I will prove them wrong
My 87 year old mother has been living with Alzheimer’s for the past two years, probably a bit longer but it became obvious to my step-father and me, her only child, 2 years ago. It is a hideous, cruel disease that not only causes loss of memory but sometimes, as with my mother, personality changes. I remember when she saw Glen Campbell on a TV show after his diagnosis and was so sad for him. Her father had Alzheimer’s and her brother was diagnosed approximately the same time as she. “No More Night” is my favorite song that Glenn Campbell sang.
I was a young Southern hillbilly kid who grew up listening to, singing, playing and even writing bluegrass and country music. In the early 1970s I was a teenaged soldier in the Army, stationed at the language school in Monterey, California (studying Vietnamese for military intelligence). I was returning to the school after a two-week Christmas break and was on the last flight from LA to Monterey and had to sign back in before midnight or be AWOL. Due to a late connecting flight, I was among the last to board and had my guitar in its cardboard case as my carry-on. (Different rules for different times.) I walked through first-class and into coach and started looking for my seat. A flight attendant (we called them stewardesses then) immediately came up and said they had overbooked the flight and there was no seat in coach for me. I felt a sudden rush of concern over the prospect of being AWOL, but she said that it’s okay, because they actually had a seat for me in first class. One of the passengers there purchased double seats and he said he was pleased to help out a fellow flier in a jam. I relaxed as we walked back up the aisle with me once again maneuvering my guitar case between the seats. I had never flown first class before and it was a big mystery. It turns out the seat was in the last two-row seat on the back right of first-class. Before I could really look around, the stewardess said for me to give her my guitar and he would take it to a safe place behind the coach section.
Even if he couldnt remember everyone, he sure looked happy playing his guitar .. i guess you when your memory goes, you dont miss what you cant remember .. sad for all those around them.. so sad.. but he left us with the most beautiful Memories and he left 8 legacys behind in great children . Thanks Kim for loving him and giving him great years and caring .. its so not easy at all. only those that have done it could understand .
I would have liked to have seen more of Glen and less about him. He did just about everything musically. He had his own TV show in the late 60s because he had a huge crossover popularity . He featured lesser known but great musicians like Jim Webb, who wrote several Campbell hits, and the late John Hartford.
RIP Glen. Any younger folks who may not know him, check out any of his greatest hits on you tube, iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, CD, Vinyl, cassette or 8-Track. The mark of a great singer is when they cover a song written by someone else and make it their own. Frank Sinatra was especially great at this. As nice as it is to see Glen able to play guitar, it might have better to actually hear him play instead of talking over him the entire time.

My grandmother had alzheimers and couldn’t do anything ouldnt speak just make moaning sounds and didn’t know who anyone was but still could play the hell out of her piano. She played since she was 4 and played with her sister in their dad’s band when she was young. She passed in 2015 at 84 and played till her death Music is a very powerful thing I’m on the autism spectrum and not lyrically but musically. I have a great ear and can come up with any little tune on the spot and can play many different things I never heard before music is almost otherworldly the way it reacts to people with mental disabilities or older folks with mental deterioration. This isn’t a great article. The narrator talks too much and it is sad they feel the need to air a family dispute at a time when Glen was unable to address himself. But I come to many of these articles mainly to read the comments and share in the love we all had for this great man and his talent. Glen’s beautiful songs touched so many and over such a long period of time, it is good to read these lovely comments and know that I am not alone when I say that his loss can never be replaced, but his life can be memorialized.
