I’m a Christian. I don’t go to any of the churches because they’re not Christian. Not a one of them. I just want you to know that I appreciate your teachings. I pick up as much as I can to correct what we’ve been taught. One thing I caught in a article of yours had to do with an altar to idols. You pointed out that they use stairs to get to the altar where God said to use a ramp. This is kind of a big deal, since if you go into a great many Protestant churches, you will see the podium two to three steps up on a platform at the front of the church. It’s always stairs. And they call it the altar. When you pointed that out? My mouth dropped.
In Mark you make too much out of an English translation. In the Greek, that Mark was translated from, it doesn’t say His mother, or His family said that. It says those beside Him said that. Those in the house that were beside Him. Jesus had just started His ministry of healing and casting out demons. No one ever saw anything like this before. He’s casting out demons and talking to them. Has He lost His mind? That’s all that took place. And the Jews were accusing Jesus of working with the devil to be able to do these things. None of this proves in any way that Jesus wasn’t who He claimed to be, nor that He was mentally unfit, nor that His mother questioned who He was.
IMO, just another contradiction, intentional or not, which helps drive the points of the chapter: “A house divided cannot stand” and “…For whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.”. Jesus is the anti-hero. Not the messiah. Later see, Matthew 10:34 – 35 “Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; ***I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.”
Up to the point of the resurrection of Christ, even his disciples didn’t fully understand what his full calling (the crucifixion) was. Mary is told in Luke 1:31-33 that he will be given David’s throne by Yahweh and reign over the house of Jacob. Gabriel did not mention years of preaching, healing, and ticking off the Pharisees after he was 30. His being considered “Out of his mind” could be related to going contrary to what they expected his path to be. Interesting that John was skipped over, the “misunderstanding motif” of that book explains quite a bit about how Jesus was perceived. He ticked off the Pharisees to the point that they wanted to kill him, the guy was a controversial figure and probably said some things that landed him in hot water on a frequent basis. Being a Biblical Unitarian myself, I don’t have to do much to get “Christians” to turn on me. Not all versions say that he is out of his mind. Some say “he is beside himself” and some say “he has lost his senses”. The greek word used here is “exestē” and is the ONLY place that word can be found anywhere in scripture and yet it’s word origin is “existémi” and is used 17 times in scripture to mean “amazed, astounded, astonished, beside oneself, lost one’s senses/bearings”. In context, the reason Mary says this is because he has so many people around him that he and his disciples can’t even eat. As a mother with compassion, is she not right to be concerned that her son is so busy and has so many people around him that he’s lost his bearings and can’t even eat. She IS a mother after all. I feel I would do the same in her circumstance. I don’t think this is as mountainous as you are making it. I think many translation are also incorrect. Just like you all prefer the Masoretic text to others, Christians also have “better” translations than others. Any version that gives the impression that Jesus was out of his mind, (as in crazy) has translated “exestē” (from ” existémi”) incorrectly. I read the NASB version which is supposed to be one of the most accurate to the original Greek and Hebrew, but even within that I see errors at times as I look at the original Greek and Hebrew. No version that is a translation of another language is going to be perfect. As for his brothers-yes, it is possible that they may have had a hard time ACTUALLY believing that their brother was the Messiah in the beginning, (although they later came around and his own brother James wrote on of our New Testament books) but as for Mary (Miriam) as you said-she had been told by the angel and has given birth while still being a virgin, so in no way would that line up with her not understanding that he was the son of God or thinking he was crazy.
There are hundreds upon hundreds of contradictions in the new testament. Evangelicals always talk in circles around these or keep them out of the view of the congregation. Anyone who reads the new testament as 100% truth should not deny the contradictions. They always say Paul is so intelligent. You can’t understand Paul. Paul was too smart for you. I will agree that Matthew has clearly borrowed from Mark and was written for a more Jewish readership, and Luke the same for a more gentile audience- Probably also fair to argue that the Narravites and stories of Jesus´ birth were added to them and probably taken from other famous stories from History, or also included to add to the idea of Jesus as the Messiah, including Narareth as his Birth town for example- which is rather counter productive as it relates to a blessing given to Samson and they had to slightly twist the word and say “Nazarene” Matt 2. However, the word family is actually incorrect, or at least the understanding of exactly who this family is, is incorrect. Let’s have a look at Mark 3:21 in the KJV Mark 3:21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself. KJV The Greek word translated as friends by the KJV and family in the ESV and many other versions is παρ’par’ which means close by, being in the presence of. As we can see, neither the Greek word for family, nor the Greek word for friends is used in the verse but rather simply those that were close to him or the ones in his presence. When Mark 3:21 is put back into its context we will see that the reference to family, as in his literal Mother and brethren is actually an impossible rendering. Mary the mother of Jesus and his brethren did not turn up until later in the narrative, after the statement had already been made. Mark 3:31 explicitly states that there came THEN his brethren and his mother standing OUTSIDE and they sought after him. Mark 3: 31There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. 32And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. 33And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? 34And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
I find it interesting that in Genesis a seemingly contradicting account of Eve’s creation is offered (first created alongside Adam and then created from Adam’s rib – this discrepancy leading to the notion of Lillith) and that Mary “the New Eve” presents a similar discrepancy of accepting Jesus “the New Adam” and rejecting him. Basically the chronological reverse of the creation of Eve. Jesus at the end does accept Mary (“Woman, behold your son”). So we see a reflection between the 2 stories – fallen Eve (Lillith); redeemed Eve; fallen Eve (after fruit) vs. redeemed Mary (virgin); fallen Mary (doubting); redeemed Mary. Plot these together and shift so the lines meet at the x axis and these stories are just different segments of the same wave, with God/Jesus spanning peak to peak/trough to trough (wavelength – walking on water / hovering over the water, able to be described equally well by referencing either the highest points or the lowest) Jesus spans from peak to peak and God spans from trough to trough, but they are one and the same thing. Anyways, what I’m trying to say is that I guess this makes Jesus the lamb(da). 🥁
The simple answer is that there are many inconsistencies between the gospels none of them is a historic account. Mark which was written first doesn’t mention the nativity at all. It only appears in Mathew which indicates it is an invention. Mathew what an observant Jew trying to make Mark less Pauline, hence the insistence on the law. Luke then tries to undo Mathew by flatly contradicting him on the nativity part and putting Paul’s words into Jesus’s mouth. All of which might appear to help Singer’s argument but of course it doesn’t. You see the problem with Christianity is that the gospels are most likely an attempt to preserve aspects of temple era Judaism that would have been subject to Roman censorship after the destruction of the temple. Paul’s Jesus is not a historical person, he is a spiritual being revealed in scripture and by direct communication with a series of people. Mark’s gospel closely follows another book called the Ascension of Isiah which describes a purely celestial crucifixion. The point of the book being that celestial Jesus, the perfect man is the ultimate sacrifice negating the need for future temple sacrifices. Unless it is an allegorical version of Mark, the Ascension of Isiah would have been written by a Pharisee as an attack on the Sadducees and the temple monopoly on sacrifice. Perfect sacrifice does away with the need for all that. If so, what we now know as Christianity was originally a part of mainstream Judaism that was suppressed by roman censors and both sides are getting it utterly wrong.
Another word to explain this: People are human natured. You can bring the Old Testament scriptures into question when it records Elijah calling down fire on the false prophets and telling King Ahab there would be no rain for three years but at his word. Why should I believe these miracles when the old Testament also records Elijah running from a woman(Jezebel)?
You know, there had to be a time or appointed time when Jesus had to “step out” and follow His calling or to begin His earthly ministry. Mary would say this the same way the deciples denied him. It was out of fear. This very thing is happening today. People will deny people out of fear or judgement. The scripture in mark does not say his family. It says his friends. Also the other two passages Jesus is being asked to see his family, and he says those who do the will of God are his family. You cannot possibly read into the scripture that Jesus family thinks he is sick mentally. Love Rabbi Tovia but this is not his best performance. If you read the chapter it clearly states in Mark 3:20 that his family felt he lost his sense because he was neglecting himself and not eating to attend the crowd, and so naturally they were genuinely concerned. According to what was said in this article, Jesus also brakes a commandment by not honoring his own mother! Idk but everything about Jesus seems to be off. It’s not until after Jesus interacts with the religious leaders that his family enters the picture in verse 31. It is well documented that Christ’s presence is missing from the Bible after the age of 12, where He was last witnessed quoting the scriptures at will in the Temple. Whatever knowledge that was gained during the missing years period, could have remodelled the child’s thinking as he became more aware of the failures of the Sadduces and the Pharisees. On His re-emergence in the Bible He is 30 years of age, quite confident in His mission, thrashing the Temple and openly voiciferous against the Chief Priests. Isn’t it quite possible that Christs family were initially shocked by the new teachings and reacted prematurely and, isn’t it also possible that the family at some stage, had to show the authorities and the neighbours, that they were ‘concerned’ about the issue for fear of reprisals? There is too much evidence missing for anyone to assume what happened.

The ESV translation that is. I thought the rabbi was smarter than this. the KJV says “friends”. Now that is a huge difference. It also shows the alterations that is going on with these modern translations. “And when his ‘friends’ heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, ‘He is beside himself’.” (Mark 3: 21.) His family showed up instance later in verse 31. For the record, they were in Bethlehem then, the town he grew up. We can assume “friends” as childhood friends or aquaintances. Childhood friends never really take you seriously especially if one declared being “…the Son of God…”. They thought he was “beside himself.” However, John 7:2-10 shows he didn’t trust his “brethren” either. Yet it could mean anything from kin, friends, actual biological family? It is hard to say. So John also saw that departure his “brethren” fostered during the course of his ministry. HOWEVER I truly believe some his family members believed in him. His brother James the “less” became an important figure in the didscipleship. (Acts 15) Mary was given to John’s care. Jude one of his brother became a believer and is the author of one of the Epistles.
i mean, this one isn’t that tough. there was a thirty year span between the birth announcement and the event in question. the human heart is prone to doubt. this would be doubly the case if they had a different conception of the messianic mission than he did. john the baptist heralded his messiahship with great confidence and later, at the hour of his death, doubted whether he’d been right. this can be easily seen as human frailty.
I know most Christians will “make up” stories to try to defend their faith here. This is very telling. Ever wonder why you have to make up stories to defend the New Testament? It is because it is full of holes. Therefore you have to build your own stories to complete it! There are serious problems with the text but rather than accept it you fashion non biblical ideas to make sense of it. If God wrote a book don’t you think he would have written it so we don’t have to finish it for him? The point here is that, according to some of the gospels Jesus’ mother knew God put a child in her. If the virgin birth story is true then she knew he was special. After all Jesus is God’s baby. So why act surprised when God’s child starts telling people he is God’s son? In my opinion their reaction supports the theory that the virgin birth story is made up. Nobody knew God put a baby into a human. Hence the big surprise when Jesus starts his ministry. If you want to know how accurate the New Testament is just compare the stories. What was Jesus last words in each? What did he drink in each? What time of day was he crucified in each? Was he a human after resurrection in Pauls letters compared to in Luke.. On and on!

Many people do not want to believe that Jesus exists or that Jesus is god so they can use that as excuse to commit sin freely. But they will get a big surprise when the day come. Remember the story of Joseph and he’s brothers and what happens in the end.? The brothers find a big surprise in Egypt when they sow he’s brother Joseph in the throne. Interesting take on the passage, but I see it quite differently. As you pointed out, Mary would definitely have known who Jesus was so I don’t believe that she was part of the “family” who came to get him. That would just not make any sense. It is easy to understand how his brothers and sisters might have trouble believing in him. Imagine growing up with someone who was always right, always smarter than you, always better than you, always more obedient, nicer, and wiser than you. How frustrating that must have been for his family. I would think they would have had an inferiority complex and would have had trouble not resenting Jesus. Why does your suggestion not make sense? Well, read the rest of the NT. Is there any place anywhere where we see that Mary questioned who Jesus was? Did she become a follower of Jesus? Yes, of course. She was in the upper room after the ascension along with the other disciples – oh, and with Jesus’ brothers too by the way – and they were praying together. It is obvious that his family had a change of heart. Jesus appeared to James, the oldest of his siblings, after he was resurrected and this seems to have been the turning point for James and probably for the rest of the family. So it’s far easier to understand the word “family” here as meaning his brothers andor sisters – or as meaning at least some of them. We are not really told more than that. I see no reason to assume that Mary would have been a part of that group, although I can understand why you would like to interpret it in that way.

If Mary was nine, ten or a couple of years older, when she was approached about having a baby, then she was not mature enough to understand the full significance of such a deep matter. Furthermore, who are the adults that put serious stock in their visions or dreams? Then certainly, a child (bride) would not have the maturity to do so. Furthermore, well on in age for that day, the idea that Mary would have gone with her other adult children to fetch or see Jesus is rather hard to swallow. The gospels are a way for the church (the Romans) to drible from the fact that the awaited jewish messiah was supposed to free the Jewish people from their domination. So they created the fantastic story of a messiah who came to die for the sins of the entire world, and they even managed to blame the jews for the execution. 😅
Jesus did not sin by breaking a commandment, and so to deny his mother publically was not what he was doing, but rather showing the committement required to be a disciple, Of course Mary would have had an idea, who her son was, but not fully after all there had never been anyone quite like him, It was Jesus mother who told attendants at a wedding in Cana the scene of his first miraculous sign “to do whatever he said to do” once the wine during the ceremony had run out, plus nowhere in the account of Mark 3:21 does it even say who pronounced the words “he’s out of his mind”….family could mean mother, father, brother, aunt, uncle whatever, it clearly does not unequivocally quote Mary!! According to the jewish faith death is the end. So the disciples did not understand the end role for jesus – thst is why they ran away when he was on trial. They thought he would die. The hebrew slaves did not know the role of moses and what god would reveal to them until the exodus – the passover event. The key verse to understanding the scenario is Mark 3: 6 – “The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him; how to destroy him (Jesus)” Herodians: Held positions of authority and power over the people. Herodians hekd political power and supported King Herod Antipas (Roman Empire Ruler) The Herodians favored submitting to the Herods and to Rome for political expectancy. Pharisees: Like the Herodians and authority and power over the Jewish people, and wanted political independence. BUT Pharisees sought to restore the Kingdom of David. They were legal experts and traditionalists to the Jewish faith. They were also heavily influenced by the “Oral law”. Jesus was at home. In front of His family and community. Herodians and Pharisees were NOT friends! They did NOT agree or have similar views. But they both were in positions of power and authority. The last thing a unprivileged, impoverished Jewish family wanted to do was challenge and upset the authority of the opposing Herodians and Pharisees. That type of decision would dramatically increase the level of difficulty and hostility toward the entire family. Thus they murmured “He lost his mind” Even though the Pharisees and the Herodians had completely opposing views they both did NOT want to disrupt, disturb, or aggravate the Roman Empire who controlled the lands. They both understood what Jesus was saying, both were offended, and grasped the possible implications of what a social uprising could bring.
