Pieter de Hooch was a Dutch painter born in Rotterdam in 1629 to Hendrick Hendricksz de Hooch, a bricklayer, and Annetge Pieters, a midwife. He was the eldest of five children and outlived all of his siblings. De Hooch was a skilled artisan and was baptized at the Reformed Church in Rotterdam in 1629. He studied under Nicolaes Berchem in Haarlem and Jacob Ochtervelt in Haarlem.

De Hooch had four sons from his first marriage, but as revealed in his will, Pieter was the only one still alive in 1657. In 1661, he married Christina Langenberg of Middelburg, where he married Annette van der Borch from Delft, probably the sister of his friend Hendrik. The couple had seven children. In 1655, Pieter de Hooch joined the Guild of Saint-Saëns.

De Hooch was a Dutch genre painter of the Delft school, noted for his interior scenes and masterful use of light. He was a pupil of Claes Berchem at Haarlem. From 1653, he was an important genre painter of interior domestic scenes. He married Jannetje van der Burch in 1654 and the couple had five children. By the end of the 1660s, De Hooch’s work had lost much. Pieter and Jannetje (probably the sister of the painter Hendrick van der Burch) had seven children.

New research now reveals that it was his son, Pieter de Hooch, also an artist. Pieter de Hooch was a Dutch painter who worked in the Seven Dutch Masters: Pieter de Hooch Gerrit ter Borch Carel Fabritius Pieter de Hooch Gabriel Metsu. Pieter de Hooch was a skilled artisan and a master of the Delft School, known for his interior scenes and masterful use of light.
