I get worried with that teaching because it leads to Mary having never sinned and being worthy of God choosing her to carry Jesus. To be sinless without God, is to be equal with God. Mary needed our Savior too.

But in Matthew, chapter 1:25 says that Joeseph did not consummate their marriage until after Jesus was born. So that means they had sex after Jesus was born. I have to disagree with you. Matt 13:55 says different from your “Opinion.” Also, James is the ONLY ONE in the Bible, called “The Lord’s Brother,” per Gal 1:19. Gal 1:19 (NASB) But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord’s brother. The grammar is Specific. “James, the Lord’s brother.” Jude, also identifies himself as the “brother of James,” per Jude 1:1, and which agrees with Matt 13:55. Jesus had brother and sisters Adelphos, the normal Greek word for one’s physical brother, is the strongest contender, despite theologies which beg to differ. Were it not for the view of sexuality that was emerging in the second century AD, it is doubtful anyone would have come up with the Catholic or Orthodox interpretation of adelphos as cousin, or stepbrother. (Besides, there is a perfectly good Greek word for cousin; it is anepsios, as in Colossians 4:10.) Further, these brothers are often found in Mary. Why would Jesus’s cousins accompany her? One more fact tells against the traditional Catholic interpretation. Psalm 69, a Messianic psalm, speaks of the rejection by Christ of his brothers (v.8)—not cousins.
Disciples were also referred to “brothers” and or “brethren.” Yet the Bible distinguishes between “His brothers” and disciples,” as in John 2:12 which says, “His brothers and disciples.” Sam is arguing that Romanism teaches that John 2:12 is literally saying, “His brothers and His brothers.” An absurd redundancy.

Well, He is The Holy God. So every aspect of Him coming down to earth and become a human is right in every aspect. Everything has to be pure and perfect. It would make sense for Mary to stay a Virgin, marry Joseph and raise this sacred kid in sullivancy. But the bible stated that he had brothers and sisters and doesn’t specify if they were step or real brothers. All we can do is research… cross reference words in the Hebrew,Greek, ect language and get your revelation/conclusion that way. The word adelphus translated brother, means from the same womb, so they can’t be from Joseph by previous marriage. Then adelphus wouldn’t be used. There was a different word for cousin. The earliest writer, Matthew, said they were brothers. That is the word he used. Matt 13:54-55 Prophecy said mary had other children. Psalms 69:7-9 I have become a stranger unto my brethren, an alien unto my mother’s children. This fulfilled in john 7:1-4, even his brothers did not believe in him I believe Lightfoot used hegissipus, who believed the gospel of james, which your church councils rejected. He was gnostic. The gospel of james said mary gave birth in a cave, that the birth was miraculous so Mary’s hymen wasn’t torn, it was verified by the midwife after the birth by touching her and looking. So the ever virginity came from a gnostic gospel. The midwife story violated the law whereby christ was brought to the temple. Every male child that opens the womb shall be called holy unto the lord. The word womb is hymen.
Wasn’t Arianism the dominant view of Christ for a short time after Nicaea? I only ask because you can’t always just base what you believe on what most people believed at different times. Athanasius is often viewed as a hero of the faith for standing alone against Arianism but by the view of majority must be right or that God wouldn’t allow heresy into the church is false. Wouldn’t Athanasius be viewed as a heretic like Luther for standing against the majority?
Sam ALWAYS cites scripture unless discussing this issue. I choose to believe the places in scripture that say Jesus had brothers. Ochim’s Razor. It doesn’t lessen Mary to have had other children after Jesus. Quite the opposite. A Jewish woman would have seen it as sin to withhold her body from her husband. If there was no consummation of the marriage after the birth of Jesus, Mary would have been guilty of sinning against Joseph. Also, Jesus is informed that his mother and brothers are waiting to see him. Not step-brothers; brothers. Finally, James is identified as the brother of Jesus as though this afforded him special consideration. A brother, not a step-brother. Jesus at the cross gave his mother to john that would be the deepest insult to his clan and family he had jewish right to do so if he had blood brothers, they would not obey this action. Jesus is called Mary’s firstborn. Logically, others had to follow. Luke 2:7. Matthew 1:25. Joseph had normal marital relations with Mary AFTER Jesus was born. The letters of James and Jude were written by Mary’s children. Jesus’ half brothers. There is absolutely no evidence that Joseph was married earlier
Why would Mary and Joseph have a sexless marriage? That bothers me that God would set Joseph up like that. Don’t touch her until after the baby is born. The baby is born-yeah just don’t touch her at all. Am I the only one that sees this as cruelty to Joseph who is human and had human desires? The same desires God says are okay to be fulfilled in marriage only? The whole “your body is not your own” just got tossed out the window? 🤷🏾♀️

Mary did have other children and it is clear as you study Scripture and you learn the Greek usage. Study the Bible and read it without any commentary from anyone because the Spirit of God is the one given to us to teach us and lead us into the truth. The Koine Greek language at the time of Jesus was a very rich language, having an unparalleled and wide vocabulary and grammar, it was the language of literature. By the first century BC, it was the universal dialect of its time, it became the every day language, that people used and understood, this was due to the conquests of Alexander the Great. With this in mind, lets look at some words for family members. Cousin namely “a-ne-psios.” Cousin, in Greek “ανεψιος”, pronounced “a- ne- psios” has it’s only occurrence in the Greek scriptures at Col. 4:10,it is therefore obvious that the Bible writers could have used the word in the case Mary and Joseph had they adopted other children in reference to their relationship with Jesus, but they did not. They instead used the word “a-del-phos ” meaning – brother ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΛΟΣΣΑΕΙΣ 4:10 1881 (WHNU) 10 ασπαζεται υμας αρισταρχος ο συναιχμαλωτος μου και μαρκος ο ανεψιος βαρναβα περι ου ελαβετε εντολας εαν ελθη προς υμας δεξασθε αυτον Colossians 4:10 (NASB) 10 Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, sends you his greetings; and also Barnabas’s cousin Mark (about whom you received instructions; if he comes to you, welcome him); In the following verses, Jesus makes a distinction between “relatives” namely “sy-gge-non”, “brothers” namely ” a-del-phon” and those of one’s own house, hence the scriptural writers could have used the appropriate Greek word required.
I am a Protestant, particularly belong to a Pentecostal church and I disagree with Sam on this issue, I wonder why he makes a great deal out of it because not worshipping Mary does not pose any threat to anyone …he’s merely defending the Catholic habit of venerating dead saints something akin to ancestral worship. Theres no scriptural basis for venerating these dead people, Nada, zero!!I dont care how much he squirms and try to twist scripture theres nowhere believers are instructed to venerate,fear or even “bless” the dead saints I agree with Sam in most things, in others I think hes just making things up to protect the Catholics
Would a first century Jew enquire into the sexual (or lack thereof) life of the Mother of Jesus? It seems out of place. It was handed to us the fact that Jesus was born of a virgin because that was from prophesy and key to the Gospel story. Afterwards however, it is not clearly spelled out in scripture that she was (or is) a perpetual virgin; it seems more likely that once again, people are postulating this. I think that is fine to think about and consider, however I think that it crosses the line to make something out of a few obscure lines and rumors into an official doctrine. Whether Mary was or was not a mother to other kids has little implications on who Jesus is and what He did for all of us (including Mary). I am more disturbed by the notion that Mary is considered “kept from sin” (aka a sinless human) when Jesus is very clearly pointed out to be the only sinless human. Did Mary die? Why would she die if she had no sin in her, unless she was killed? If she was killed, like Jesus God would have to bodily bring her back to life because she carried no sin to warrant her death. This is my logic on the matter. The Catholic church teaches that she did indeed die (according to my readings). According to my readings, she “chose to die”. What troubles me the most is what follows afterwards: I have met those who seem to focus on Mary more than Jesus. But I can see why as her status has gone from the Blessed (earthly) Mother of our Lord to the “Queen of Heaven”. This once again is musings of councils, who claim to be God’s representatives on earth; and perhaps they are indeed, but humans make mistakes.

Joseph was a good man, if he was not, he could have told on Mary then both her and unborn child’s life would be in danger. Thus, to leave his children (4 named and at least two unnamed daughters) hardly a good man. The Bible was clear about his family, they were looking for him most likely Joseph had passed away, possible carpenter/contractor. He again, gave dual answer as God and man in Matt. 12. Thus, Mary was not a perpetual virgin.
Wouldn’t God have mentioned something so important, that Jesus had brothers or sisters? I believe that if Jesus had them, he would have found room in the scriptures to say something more about them. Jesus had no brothers and Mary had only Jesus as a son. The Lord took care of Mary for the birth of Jesus and after the birth he continued to take care of her until the end of her life – Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! Mary remained blessed even after the birth of Christ. Israelis call their compatriots whom they care about as brothers and daughters. We have many examples, but let’s say a few: (Exodus 4.18) Moses went back to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Please let me go back to my brothers in Egypt to see whether they are still alive.” And Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace… (Mark 5.34) “Who touched me?’” 32And he looked around to see who had done it. 33But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” It would be foolish to comment that Moses meant real brothers – instead of his compatriots or it might be foolish to claim it is Jesus’ daughter whom he raised from the dead – just because he addressed her that way, calling her his daughter! 46While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him.
You guys are confused about adoption in the ancient world. The ancient peoples including the Jews did not view adoption the same way that we do in the modern world. Jesus adopting John as His brother in NO WAY is a mark of shame on either John nor the brothers of Christ, nor Mary! There could have been very good reasons for Jesus to want Mary to be accessible to the early Christians, (including Dr Luke), and it is possible that Jesus’ brothers were not even Christians at the time of His crucifixion! No wonder He adopted the Apostle John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, into His family to help take care of His mother and give her access to the early church writers! There was no reason for Mary and Joseph, for not to have sons and daughters after the birth of Jesus. They were married and had their needs to fullfill as a couple. It is as simple as it is and documented in the scripture, that Jesus had brothers and sisters. What is so weird about this, by the way, that Mary had children from Joseph, her husband, after the birth of Jesus? Do you really think, that Joseph gave up his sexual desires, in regard of procreation ( would be very unjewish), because his wife – Mary, had born the Son of God – the Savior? Being a husband of my wife, I wouldn’t never, ever allow my wife to cut the sexual relationship with me, for the reason that she was impregnated by the Holy Spirit, in order to bring the Messiah into the world. It is getting so crazy and surreal! Very much like roman catholic. Yes, Joseph had sexual relationships with Mary after the birth of Jesus and they had sons and daughters. What is so perverse and ungodly with this, since they were in a husband and a wife?

We cannot know for certain. It’s easy for me to imagine how and why the early church would begin insisting upon Mary’s perpetual virginity, without warrant, very early. I don’t know that that’s what happened, but it’s easy to imagine why. The culture that surrounds the church always affects the church to some degree. The gnostic thinking that surrounded the early church, and which John taught specifically against, would have them thinking that he body is bad, and thus sex – even in marriage! – is bad and impure, so it would be improper for the woman who birthed Jesus to have sex even with her husband. However, sex IS pure, in marriage. There is not need to think impurely about sex *in marriage*. The gnostic influence can easily lead there, though. Mary’s perpetual virginity is also not something to divide over, though, since it’s irrelevant to salvation. But if one party (needlessly) insists that the other is damned for thinking differently, which the RCC does, then there’s cause for division.
It doesn’t make logical sense. So Joseph never had sex with his wife? Mary was the perpetual virgin? Being married consummating the marriage is having sex with your spouse. So they weren’t really married? It makes no sense. And why would Jesus’ cousins be with Mary and not their own parents coming to Jesus? And WHY is this so important to Catholics? Mary isn’t God and she didn’t create God which she is treated like. She wasn’t sinless like Catholics treat her like.she was blessed because God chose her she was favored because God chose her. God didn’t choose her because she was blessed or because she was favored. God made her those things by choosing her. Mary wasnt virgin born herself and she wasn’t taken up to heaven without dying. We don’t have that information at all pure speculation not in the Bible at all.
Subjects like this really make the Protestants manifest. You can see how full of pride they are when they trust their own interpretation of scripture over the historical teachings of the Church. EVERY Christian believed in the Perpetual Virginity of Mary for the first 600 years of the Church. SO the Bible you butcher to prove this was not the case was compiled by people who ALL believed Mary had only one son. Make it make sense.
Dear brother in Christ I am surprised at your level of defence for this level of Mary idolatry even though you and Catholics don’t call it that. Firstly in Colossians 4:10 the word cousin is used by Paul. While in in Galatians 1:19 Paul mentions James the Lord’s brother. In connection with the verse “not yet known” and these verses saying James and others being the brother and sisters of Jesus that clearly means that Mary and Joseph had relations. For others that’s not a problem for Catholics it is. If it were meant to denote what you wrote in a comment earlier then the verse in Matthew 1:25 should of stated, “Joseph had not yet known her until his death” sadden to say this attempt to make Mary a virgin her whole life is a twisting of scripture. And your early church concept is flatly wrong due to the fact that the new testament is the early church and Jesus clearly rebuked some of the seven churches in the book of revelation meaning just because the early church said it doesn’t necessarily make it the truth.
Because people believe this doesn’t prove this in the Word of God. Show me the Word and not man’s thoughts on this. In God’s Word, He says Jesus’ mother and his brethren came to see Him. This is quoted in many passages. Not one passage says she stayed a virgin. It states the Joseph knew her not until she had brought forth her first-born son. Matthew 1:25. As we know, to know your wife in Biblical terms means to have sex with her. Also, no one uses the term first-born if there aren’t other children born from the same parents. They would have said her only son. Also, the Word speaks of the duties of husband and wife. Why would Mary be in contradiction of those duties to her husband? The only people who choose to spread these stories are those who benefit from them. There is no scripture to back this up.
Read the old testament. Deuteronomy, numbers, all of those books that go into every little detail about how the priests are to run judaism. Now read every book in the new testament that goes into every little detail on how the catholic church is run. Whats that? There are none? Catholics believe this, The encyclical Mystici corporis Christi from Pope Pius XII holds that Mary was also sinless personally, “free from all sin, original or personal”. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that by the grace of God “Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long.” That would put Mary on equal footing as God (Jesus).

Church historians are NOT the inspired Word of God, those two verses ARE. This implies that he waited until after Mary gave birth to Jesus, THEN had His brothers and sisters. There’s no BIBLICAL reason for them not to have more in their family. Being a Protestant historian doesn’t make them right. Only the Bible is the inspired Word of God. There’s NO REASON for her to remain a virgin when she was legally married to a good man whom she had a family with.
Jesus was not conceived naturally, therefore his birth was also not natural. I even doubt that he had a belly-button because he was not dependent on Mary like we are dependent on our mothers in their wombs… Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? Matthew 13:55 James was his half-brother, Joses was his cousin (Matthew 27:56), Simon was also his cousin, Judas was his half-brother.
Catholics believe Mary was a perpetual virgin because they are idolators who deify Mary, build statues to her, and pray to her. The traditions of MAN. “Martin Luther believed she was a perpetual virgin.” So? Is Martin Luther right about everything? No, and neither are you and neither am I. Paul had to correct Peter and Peter had the Spirit of God. Being believers doesn’t make us infallible.
You go by what the infallible magisterium of the holy Catholic Church says and not protestant heretics. The Bible is a Catholic book and on,y the Catholic Church can interpret it correctly.
