To any fellow asians who are successful, have some self-respect and cut-off any of your family members, especially parents, who treat you or make you feel this way. They don’t see you as a person, you’re their farm animal at best, and one which they will endlessly abuse until you say “no more”. Please, choose to say “no more”, who cares if they literally starve to death, you deserved better. Frankly, I am exhausted, utterly exhausted seeing this within the culture and it’s high time we stopped ignoring it. The first step to solving any problem (like Trisha’s mom here) is recognizing there is one.
This is child abuse. If you have Asian parents and they treat you like this, do not ignore them. Do not feel guilt or shame. Stand up and talk back to them. Demand respect, demand praise, demand love. Put your foot down and set a very clear boundary. You are good enough and nothing your parents say can change that. There is no such thing as perfect or being the best. You simply do the best YOU can. Your parents have an obligation to give you unconditional love for as long as you live. They are obligated to support you until the day either of you dies. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

Be happy when you get poor self-esteem at an early age. It will drive you to perfectionism, nothing you ever do will be good enough in your eyes. This will make you indispencible as a professional compared to people that cut corners. You will instinctively know from very early on that you can’t rely on anyone but yourself and you won’t allow yourself to get spoiled. It’s a brutal training but people that go through that hell as I did can emergy 10x stronger than their peers on the other end of it. Years later, that professionalism will get you enough money to buy yourself out of this attitude. If and only if you wish to jump ship. Some people choose to stay in guilt their entire lives, but that’s on them ultimately.
This is so accurate it’s not even funny. My parents are fine, but I know so many friends whose parents are like this. They made their children emotionally dependent on them so they can pull this crap. When those people die I won’t go to their funeral, for I may not have the self-control to not spit on their coffin.
