What Caused Family Guy To Be Removed From Netflix?

5.0 rating based on 192 ratings

Family Guy, an adult-animated sitcom series by Seth MacFarlane, is set to depart Netflix worldwide in January 2022. The show, which has already departed from the platform in the US, is due to Netflix’s failure to renew its contract with Fox last year, meaning all Fox shows will eventually be removed from the platform. Fox has a stake in Hulu, which gives advertising money to Fox, ABC, and NBC.

The reason for the removal of Family Guy seasons is that Netflix did not renew the show’s license, so the contract between the two parties expired. The show was pulled from Netflix in other countries in 2022, moving to Disney Plus. However, Netflix’s content agreements with Fox have changed, as they opted out of a renewed contract with Fox, which is who owns the show. The show is likely licensed exclusively to another network, and Netflix cannot currently get the rights.

Amazon Prime has more seasons of Family Guy, which premiered on Fox in 1999 but was canceled after just three seasons due to low ratings. The show’s popularity and charitable endeavors have led to the cancellation of the show.

In conclusion, Family Guy’s departure from Netflix is due to the company’s failure to renew its contract with Fox, leading to the loss of all Fox programming. The show’s continued airing on various channels in the US, including Disney Plus, is a result of the company’s decision to move towards only owning their own content agreements. The show’s success may be due to the fact that Netflix has opted out of a renewed contract with Fox, which is who owns the show.

What Happened To The Family Guy Seasons On Netflix?

Over recent years, many Netflix regions have unfortunately lost more seasons of "Family Guy" than they gained. Traditionally, new seasons of the show would premiere in September; however, in 2022, rather than expanding its library, Netflix lost three seasons when the rights expired. The initial loss included seasons 9 to 14, which left Netflix on October 28, 2017, with the remaining seasons departing the platform by February 2018. Reports from late 2018 indicated an unlikely return of "Family Guy" to Netflix US.

Now, it's predicted that several regions will lose the series entirely as additional seasons’ rights expire, meaning seasons 19 and 20 won't be available. Despite creator Seth MacFarlane confirming that the show is not ending soon—having just celebrated its 25th anniversary—"Family Guy" was announced to no longer be part of Fox's fall lineup in May 2024. The series now has episodes airing on multiple channels in the U. S. and is slated for streaming in 2025.

Historically, "Family Guy" was pulled from Netflix due to a contract dispute between the platforms, resulting in a shift to Hulu and Disney Plus post-Disney's acquisition of Fox. Currently, the series is available on various Disney-owned streaming services while Netflix has lost the entire "Family Guy" catalog, starting from its initial departure in 2018.

Is Family Guy Rated R?

Family Guy holds a TV-14 rating, reflecting its mature content that caters to an audience interested in pop culture references and Peter Griffin's antics. Despite its title, it is not a family show; it includes inappropriate material for younger viewers. The show features frequent violence, explicit sexual content, and strong profanity, often using R-rated language. Drug use is prevalent, including marijuana and meth, which further emphasizes its adult themes.

While Family Guy is less edgy than South Park, it still crosses many lines, warranting its censorship for television. Created by Seth MacFarlane, it follows the Griffin family in Quahog, Rhode Island. The show’s IMDb rating stands at 8. 1, indicating its popularity. Over time, especially in later seasons, Family Guy adopted a cruder tone, leading to its TV-14 designation resembling a TV-MA rating. Critics have acknowledged its impact, with The Times ranking it among America’s top shows.

However, parents are advised to approach its content with caution, as it contains significant levels of violence, strong language, and adult themes, making it unsuitable for children. Overall, Family Guy is clearly designed for adult viewers.

On January 26, 2023, Fox confirmed that "Family Guy" would be renewed for its twenty-second and twenty-third seasons, ensuring the show's continuation for two more years. • Netflix is always removing a lot of the good stuff like they did with Family Guy and Futurama. I remember when they kept removing and adding Titanic over and over again. I wasn’t really into the movie, but that adding and removing repeatedly situation always annoyed me. What was up with that? I think they finally stopped because now I’m not seeing the movie anywhere on Netflix. Another thing I hate about Netflix is that sometimes they only put in ONLY ONE SEASON of a show like Attack on Titan. Even though Season 2 is now officially out, (I know this because I saw a DVD of it at Target or Walmart.) they don’t even bother to put Season 2 on Netflix at all! Why!? I was dying to finally watch Season 2! I know I can just buy the DVD, but DVDs are B.S! (Obviously a reference to “You know what’s Bulls**t” on YouTube) The title of this article is correct. Netflix sucks! Also, about the frozen pixels, that happens to me when I watch it on my Samsung Smart TV. UPDATE: OMG I just realized Season 3 of Attack on Titan released. Now I know Netflix just does not care because on Netflix, Attack on Titan is still on Season 1!

  • “I love how much money they pump into shows I have no interest in. The way that your region dictates your content is a wonderful feature too, and not at all cheap or misleading. Then, once I have run out of films to add to my watch list, usually after 2 minutes, they spam me with foreign language films!”

  • This is extremely true what they neglect to mention is Netflix being expensive. I have Hulu that gets all the new episodes of family guy and any other shows although tot 2-3 days later they still managed to get it not mention I’m only paying 5 dollars a month yes this is with commercials but I don’t care as long as I get to watch what I want doesn’t matter to me.
