As someone who has lost a spouse, I reacted the same way. I was very calm and collected and didn’t cry until 3 days later. My body and mind was in too much of shock. We also had a baby together, and I was only 20 years old. So my first instinct is to put my feelings aside to take care of our son, and be collected enough to arrange his funeral. I didn’t have any reaction until months later when I was in therapy and had a breakdown from what had happened. It was such a out of body moment and you trick yourself into thinking everything is ok so you can function. 3 years later I still struggle with his death. Everyone is different, so I cannot say if he killed her or not. I feel like he didn’t, but who knows.
I’m just so tired of people being instantly judged for their reactions. Can we stop with that? Everybody reacts differently. Just because they don’t react the way you think they should doesn’t make them guilty. If you’re over-emotional you’re acting. If you under-react you must be a sociopath. A lot of people have low to no emotional affect and we need to stop assuming that that’s evidence of their guilt.
Can we take a minute and appreciate Bailey’s flow and storytelling? She’s putting on her makeup so she has to say everything in order- she can’t just rerecord something later and add it back into the mix. I have to do that alllll the time because I leave out an important piece of evidence or get a date wrong. Way more appreciation for Bailey after trying to make my own articles!
I can confirm that not everyone responds to the news of death in the ‘expected’ way of breaking down and crying… when police came to our house to tell my Mum that her son was dead, she was very calm and collected which she later said was probably her work mode from being a palliative nurse. Coincidentally it was also when viewing the body that she broke down, and from there was pretty inconsolable for months. It can seem suspicious but sometimes it is just how it is.
I know a girl who gave herself consecutive concussions while drinking heavily (she was getting over a break-up), and didn’t act like she was in pain at all. Also, I’m short, barely over 5 foot – are they seriously claiming that if I fall on concrete I can’t severely injure myself? If I smack my head off the pavement I’m not going to get hurt??? Even if it’s the curb??? That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Bone density varies between people. A few years ago I tripped on the pavement and fractured my wrist just from reaching out to stop my fall. In school one girl stood on another girl’s foot by accident and literally broke it. Human bodies are weirdly fragile at times.
I actually came to the EXACT same conclusion as you did about her death. Being short doesn’t mean you can’t smack your head just right that it splits open. I think she got up after the fall running after her phone after knocking herself out, confused and out if it, onto her knees in the grass and set the bottle and phone down, then falls forward onto her face and either passes out or dies there.
Honestly it’s totally believable that she fell. My mom and dad nearly had a similar experience, thankfully she found him and was able to call an ambulance. He’d fallen and broken both shoulders and the temperature was in the negatives. If she hadn’t found him he could’ve easily frozen to death and she might’ve been blamed.
Some people just don’t emote automatically. It takes me days to process things most times. Doesn’t mean people don’t feel things or lack empathy, it just takes a while to land. I also don’t emote in front of people I’m not comfortable with or don’t trust. Some people need to feel safe to be vulnerable. The army literally destroys peoples humanity. What do they expect???
Not sure what they were smoking, but you can absolutely cause a fatal head injury by simply falling from your normal height. That’s the whole reason you’re supposed to keep a person awake after a fall until they’re properly assessed by medical professionals. A lot of behavior in that time can be observed to check for brain damage. Alcohol is a blood thinner. In fact, in moderation, it’s been observed as preventing certain types of strokes in people over the age 65. While I won’t completely rule him out (there’s always a possibility), this case can easily be seen as an accidental death, 100% done by Kat. -Drops the bottle, chips a piece and it goes flying wherever -Loses her footing and falls back, hitting her head -Being inebriated, doesn’t feel the pain and gets back up after a few minutes, leaving blood behind -Gets up, finds her phone, gets turned around trying to make it back home -falls again across the street, phone and bottle in front of her as that’s where she let go of them. Possibly getting ready to push herself up, not having enough strength to do so. Dies as a combination of her injuries and the elements.
I’m still stuck on the door being opened after she was dead and he was asleep. I feel like there could have been another person involved and police were so focused on the husband they didn’t look into it enough. I mean it was only 11 at night and she was a beautiful woman outside alone in her underwear and she was wasted.
15:19 side note, a fact I learned in the passing of my brother (who was in a DUI accident) blood alcohol levels post mortem actually rise bc of the way it is measured in autopsy and something (insert science here) that happens to the alcohol while it sits in the blood after death…so she may or may not have been THAT lit.
The step counting app should have actually proven his innocence. It recorded her final movements. if he killed her, his movements would have coincided with hers during that same time frame. They didn’t. Saying “he took it off” and that her “body was moved” sounds like they were trying to make it seem more sinister than it actually was
When my nephew died and I was informed I was in shock and denial to look at me you would have thought I lost my wallet and was trying to rethink my steps. I had so many thoughts going through my head I didn’t hit sadness until I actually saw his lifeless body and it became real that I totally lost it.
Is it possible that Jeff just hadn’t realized what was going on? As a smoker myself, when stressed, the first thing I want to do is light a cigarette. He was probably stressed about not know where his wife was and stressed about the argument. He was probably having a think while smoking. And the full realization hadn’t hit about the police being there.
I’m usually skeptical of “freak accidents” but given the evidence he seems innocent, it could have been a random attack by somebody else but I don’t think it was the boyfriend. We’re quick to blame the male because statistically it’s overwhelming, also quick to blame men in military because they are seen as “cold” and can control their emotions but the fact that the mother defended him and said he cried and broke down about her daughter’s death in private, I kinda believe he’s innocent with this current evidence
I never know how to feel about these kind of stories because it seems like if the person who dies has a significant other, that person is blamed a lot of the times. What if he didn’t do it? The court system is so messed up because both the prosecution and defense side want to get paid so they just make up whatever story sounds best to have the jury take their side.
Here’s what I suspect may have happened. She went out to get her phone. Maybe she took the bottle of absinthe out with her (can’t remember if this was specified in the article). Maybe she dropped the bottle, and then when she went to pick it up, she slipped and fell and hit her head on the bottle. This would account for the injury being so intense for a short person’s fall, the head wound aligning with the shape of the bottle, and the chip of glass missing from the bottle, say if it got pushed against the footpath/curb during the impact. And then as Bailey says, she could have got up, not knowing how bad the injury was. Maybe she started to feel faint from the injury/blood loss and set down her phone and bottle to prepare to sit down and rest for a bit, but then passed out in the process of this. This would explain the two separate pools of blood and the staged-looking nature of the phone and bottle. Of course, this is ENTIRELY conjecture, but this potential explanation came to me pretty quickly, so I’m not sure why it seemingly wasn’t considered when the case was being investigated.
PSA: absinthe is safe to drink when drank as intended. It’s meant to be diluted with water and never consumed straight like a shot. The alcohol content is extremely high. Also Diluting it with ice water is how you activate the flavor oils in the liquor so it will taste nice (minty anise flavor) absinthe is not hallucinogenic nor will it make you high… but it is hard liquor. One “shot” of absinthe should have like 8 shots of water added.

I totally agree with you on this one. Even regardless, the evidence was paltry. I feel like she fell, got up, grabbed her drink again, then stumbled around before she fell again- – breaking open an already cracked wound. That accounts for that blood on the bottle. Poor guy tried to do the right thing, in my opinion.
It never ceases to blow my mind how the whole “beyond a reasonable doubt” thing just DOES NOT even come into play in so many cases. It seems to happen so often that jurors will convict someone of a crime based on their emotions and how they think or feel things may have gone down, even when there’s little to no hard, factual evidence to prove it. In that way, our justice system fails way too often.
I’ve had quite a fair share of not being frantic or immediately showing emotion upon hearing some terrible news about my love ones passings. I need like weeks to process and when i finally starting to grieve, there’s no stopping me. I can like just have tears flowing down my cheeks while having lunch or just some random moments of the day. So i kinda get that,not showing emotion parts.

Solely focusing on this part: Jeff pacing, spacing out, and being “emotionless” are symptoms of dissociation. It’s common with a lot of people who have experienced trauma. I regularly experience dissociation and I’ve got responses saying I’m being “cold” or “not grounded”. Not taking sides, but hope they took note of this

I agree with you Bailey 100%, my thoughts were exactly the same, she tripped, knocked herself out, woke up, staggered across the road, with severe head fracture, drank some more, fell asleep blotto, and slipped into unconsciousness and death. I’ve read that one in ten cases of convicted felons in the US are innocent. That statistic is staggering. I feel sorry for him, I hope the innocent project take on his case.
I agree with you Bailey. I don’t feel the husband killed her. My Mother-in-law suffered a bad fall years ago, she too is short (around the same height as Kitty) and had slipped on ice while walking 2 small dogs. The fall rendered her unconscious, and when she did finally come to, she was bleeding and down a dog. She managed to get up, find the missing dog, get back to the house and then took HERSELF to the hospital where they found she had fractured her skull and had an extremely severe concussion. I can’t imagine the outcome of that night being any different from Kats had my MIL been trashed too. I think the man is innocent.
I absolutely HATE when the police is like ‘yeah so he didn’t drop to his knees and cry his eyeballs out, so, guilty’. FRICK THAT. My parents were, also, wrongfully accused and found guilty in Alabama. Some of the jurors were basically sleeping .. and that was allowed but we couldn’t show emotion when the decision was made. If the front door was left open 2.5 hours, maybe she did slip and fall in a weird way and he realized hours later. Maybe guilt over the accident or him not wanting to look suspicious made him stage the scene. Leaving the door open that long intentionally doesn’t seem like something someone would plan and makes it look even more suspicious if someone were to notice.
I don’t think he did it either. Your theory makes so much sense, and I bet she did hit her head on the curb of the sidewalk. I used to drink A LOT, and there have been plenty of occasions where I hurt myself without realizing, ended up with mysterious scrapes, cuts and bruises, or even fallen down the stairs and not remembered. If her blood alcohol was THREE TIMES the legal limit, she was so heavily impaired and almost certainly blacked out. I’ve come out of blackouts or woken up the next day with some pretty serious injuries that I really probably should have gone to the hospital for.
My thoughts, crimes of passion, I.E. jealous husbands, are always up close and personal and violent. This sounds like she got hit by a car, which would account for the 200 steps she took. Wandering around in the dark she probably fell in the street and a car hit her and threw her body. And maybe the person saw her and moved her body but then fled the scene cause they were scared. This is one of the reasons that if something happened and I was ever on trial in Superior Court, I would choose to have my verdict decided by a judge…that and I have served on a jury and it was 90% dumb a***s who had no idea what they needed for a conviction. They talked about how they felt dude was guilty, not how they knew.
I feel the same way, and I agree with your theory. I can’t believe the jury found him guilty with the little circumstantial evidence the prosecution had. I think she fell, hit her head, then tried to get up and walk, then fell again ultimately to her death. This is worrisome for all cases where they is clear evidence and the person walks free like Casey Anthony! SMH
Maybe I’m crazy but the bruising on her leg with the head trauma makes me think of a possible hit and run scenario. I think that is more conclusive then her husband attacking her. He’s innocent, wrongfully convicted, but maybe they should of focused on other possibilities then just the husband doing it.
It’s called practicing medicine for a reason. When i was 18, i broke my left leg in 7 places including my knee and the joint by stepping into a hole in my yard. The doctors at the er swore up and down someone either kicked me in the knee or hit me with a baseball bat. Mind you, I’m barely 5’2″ And no matter what I said about how I broke my leg, the doctors didn’t believe me and called the cops. I laughed at the cops and told them there was no person who assaulted me unless they were going to arrest a gopher hole
Living in Birmingham during this case was so messy. I went to Birmingham Southern College (graduate in May, yay!) And I remember they put the campus on lock down when this happened and then sent out this vague email saying “you’ve probably heard about about an employee making the news but their keys have been taken so no worries 👍”. And then the next day I went to my forensic psychology class (ironically) and our professor just stared at us for like the first 30 seconds of class and then went “so…. that happened 😳 “
when he said he went to sleep after an argument over her phone, that raises red flags. if you’re so upset that you throw your significant others phone out the front door, there’s most likely a lot boiling inside you’re gonna get out as well. there might not have been enough evidence but the story doesn’t completely add up in my eyes.
I once seen a case where a woman got out her exes car after arguing with him, and some random OTHER guy who was mad at HIS girlfriend took his anger out on the woman. It was a totally random crime (well, “random”); the suspect didn’t know the woman and never met her before. He was just in the same place as her and couldn’t contain himself. I genuinely don’t know what to believe with this one, but im leaning more towards it wasn’t the husband. Just because he has such specific excuses for things. Like the upside down left hand prints on the bottle just being from grabbing it out the bag? That’s such a specific little detail I feel you wouldn’t know to use as an excuses unless it was the truth. Then again. You don’t just destroy your partner’s personal items because your upset. So idk.
Imagine if someone had a doorcam – jeez. It really does sound like the prosecution and the jury really went into Jeff because of what his wife was into, like they couldn’t have been a normal couple (which is what they sounded like to me), they had to be abusive and wildn’ out. This reminds me of the farm case with the rake, no real evidence, but a lot of BS to bring down some moral judgement.
Jealousy is a big green monster, that may have come out when he was drinking. Two things seem fishy to me. I don’t think I’ve ever bought a bottle of any sort of liquor and came home and it had a chip on the bottom. Another thing is that if he threw her cell phone out and she went out it doesn’t seem like he would Just leave her out there all night. Like they’re arguing he throws the phone outside,
The only thing sus to me is the evidence that she had been considering leaving him. Some people have the “if I can’t have you then nobody can” mentality which could’ve been his motive. That being said, I probably would’ve still voted not guilty since there was no “beyond a reasonable doubt” type of evidence.
I don’t feel like he killed her but I feel like he knew something. Who goes directly to bed after they get into an argument… Without the person. And if this is someone that you sleep every night you’ll usually wake up in the middle of the night bc there not next to you. I just feel like he knew she was on the lawn before the cops came.
Oh he definitely did it. The steps on his phone, the door opening? I don’t see how that’s explainable. And a soldier husband – very high correlation of domestic violence with military partners. He might have just been charasmatic and confident enough to believe he can get out of anything and not care.
I agree with Bailey. I don’t think he killed her. I think the only person who truly knows what happened is Kat. I was even thinking maybe she was struck by a passing car or something similar. I know she doesn’t have the physical injuries to her body to back that claim. But what if in her extremely intoxicated state she did infact fall and smack her head on the curb, then after recovering slightly she was bent over stumbling and some type of vehicle drove by and with it being so dark struck her in the head with the side mirror??? I don’t know, I know it sounds a little out there but sometimes the craziest explanation ends up being the truth. Either way, not only 1 life was ruined by her death, which is true of any type of untimely death, I guess. It’s still sad to know someone so bright in the world (even with her issues that too many people deal with) was snuffed out so quickly, whether intentional or not.
But if he didn’t do it then why did he lie about being asleep all night when his phone shows he was up & moving multiple times? He said he was as asleep from 10:30pm yet there’s movement from his phone & the door opening & closing multiple times between 10:30pm & the morning when the police show up. Why did he lie? Also, if he’s able to hide his emotions easily- then no wonder her mum & their friends never saw him aggressive or angry. Just because they never witnessed him behave that way doesn’t mean he didn’t have it in him. Tough call.
The part that gets me is the door being open for 2.5 hours. Jeff should have been the one to find her and wouldn’t have been running around trying to find her if the door was open. He would have seen that and went outside right away. That’s the only part that makes me think he had something to do with it.
