I love how Harry’s family had the invisibility cloak passed down, while Voldemort’s had the resurrection stone, even though they each would have wanted the opposite the most. Voldemort was obsessed with death and feared it above all, while never being able to understand love. He never had a use for bringing back his loved ones because he had no loved ones. But an invisibility cloak would’ve been the perfect protection from death. Meanwhile, Harry used the cloak, but never needed it deep down. But he had SO many loved ones he wished he could see, and would have probably become obsessed with the resurrection stone, had he been given it as a child. Just more parallels and symbolism to the hero and the villain.

My theory is that the Deathly Hallows are trials. The Elder Wand represents Humility because those who had it often brags. The Stone represents Acceptance because those who used it often could not accept death of loved ones. The Cloak represents Courage because ones only hide when one feels fear. To be humble before Destiny, to accept Fate and to brave ones own End. Harry is the True Master of Death because he went through the trial and excel all three. Dumbledore knew he had too much regret that he failed the Stone and Voldemort will never win the Elder Wand because of his pride and power hunger. Harry gave up his Cloak to face Voldemort and thus brave his own execution. He accept his fate when he used the Stone. And he has no need for glory even with the Elder Wand as he humbly return it to Dumbledore.

I also find it interesting how the blood protection is only active when Harry can call the place where his blood is home. At this point he no longer considers the Dursley’s house home, but he does consider Hogwarts to be home, just like Tom Riddle does, and they were both on Hogwarts grounds at the time, both at the place they each consider to be home.

I thought the reason Harry didn’t die in the forest was because the piece of Voldemort’s soul that was inside him. Harry was “the Horcrux he never meant to make” because the spell that backfired off baby Harry should’ve killed him. When Voldemort tried killing Harry in the forest what he really did was sever the long standing connection between Harry and the piece of his own soul that was inside, effectively “killing” his own Horcrux.

If I remember correctly from the books I could’ve sworn that the reason Harry didn’t die was because when Voldemort killed Lilly that the power nearly killed him and unintentionally placed the last piece of Voldemort’s soul into Harry, and when Voldemort killed Harry in the forrest it killed the last remnant of Voldemort’s soul. Now that I think about it, it’s no wonder why Harry and Voldemort were such gifted and powerful wizards. (As explained by olivander in the first film) Because Harry and Voldemort are direct disendents of the three brothers who were powerful enough to make (what was thought at the time) as the most powerful objects in history.
I miss Snape! I know he had to died for the dramatic reason of passing on information to Harry without anyone finding out but come on! His life was worse than Harry’s! I haven’t read the book in a while, but I remembered in the King’s Cross chapter that Dumbledore also said that, since the wand couldn’t kill Harry (because it refused to kill its master, just like you mentioned in the article), it killed the only thing it could…the piece of Voldemort’s soul that resided within Harry. And something about the fact that he didn’t fight back made it work. My memory is fuzzy so I’m sure i fudged some of the details. However, I do also remember reading the part about the mom’s protection living on because of Voldemort.

The whole story of Harry Potter is about grief, greed, jealousy, about close ones betraying one another by being to greedy, grief, or jealousy. If you think about the marauders, wormtail betrayed his friends for greater protection, the 3 brothers have been killed by their greed of wanting things that lead them to their demise, and Harry and Voldemort, related loved ones fighting each other, Harry for his friends and to protect others, Voldemort for power, being greater than death, and jealousy of Harry Potter🤯🤯🤯
The movies and the books are already so complicated but with all this additional information I don’t understand how someone can remember all of this and the fact that JK Rowling came up with all of this (all though all theories aren’t approved by her) is bizarre, that is why Harry Potter is the best book and movie series and that is also why JK Rowling is such a fantastic author.
Honestly i found ir amazing how J.K.Rowling brought such a famous children story of the wizarding world to have a very real yet cleverly designed story in it’s own right. The comparison of the Three Brothers to Harry, Tom, and Snape. The fact Harry and Tom are descendants of said brothers. I want to point out that when Tom killed Harry while his mother’s enchantment kept him alive it wasn’t the only option to how he could survive the Killing Curse since Harry has a part of Tom’s soul in him. Wether Harry is the Master of Death, his mother’s sacrifice is what protects him, or if Death took Tom’s soul as payment for Harry’s return. All in all The Deathly Hallows is my favorite, for it’s story, it’s history, and the crucial role it plays in the Wizarding world.
I thought it was explained in King’s Cross (the chapter) that Harry was accidentally turned into a horcrux after his mother died. That is why you see the red soggy bit of voldemort (looking as he did before he was dropped in the cauldron in Goblet of Fire), its the piece of his soul that died and allowed Harry to return to his former life. It also explains his ability to speak and understand parsltoungue naturally, and why Voldemort could access his thoughts so easily. 🐸🍵

I can be wrong but If I remember correctly, in the deathly hallow’s book, after Harry repairs his original wand he does not break the elder wand instead he places it back in Dumbledore’s tomb (the idea being that when Harry dies, the elder wand’s power would be broken because it would have no owner after Harry’s death (assuming Harry dies of natural cause). But these articles, while they take the movies as a visual help, are subject to the books’ canon.. so Harry didn’t destroy the wand. He put it back into Dumbledore’s tomb, saying that should he, Harry, die of a natural death, the wand will lose its power since Harry has not been beaten. The movie went a more visually attractive path, but might ultimately contracdict itself should the wand ever play a role againin future stories. Rowling left herself that door open by not destroying the wand in the book,s and so should have the films in my opinion.
Just like the three main characters are representations of the three brothers, the three fates of the hallows are representations of their lives; Antioch met a violent end, like the wand. Cadmere willingly cast aside his own life, like the dropped and forgotten resurrection stone. Ignotus lived out his life in peace, just like the cloack is the only one of the hallows that remains.
I always thought that the reason why Harry didn’t die in the forest was because it was Voldemort who had tried to kill him. Since he was a horcrux, only Voldemort would be the only one who can destroy the part of Voldy inside of him. So when Voldemort tried to kill him, Voldemort instead destroyed a part of himself inside of Harry instead of actually killing Harry.

I feel like Harry didn’t die in the forest because like the second time, The Elder Wand acknowledged him as its rightful master. But because Harry had a part of Voldemort in him as a horcrux The Elder Wand found something that didn’t belong to its master and killed it. This would be why the second time it rebounded. As the wand didn’t find something that wasn’t a part of its master to kill.

In the books, Dumbledore claims that it’s unlikely that the Myth surrounding the Deathly Hallows is true, and that the Pevirell brothers were so powerful and versed in magic, that they created the objects themselves – and perpetuated the myth to boost the intrinsic value of the artifacts. However, I can’t help but question this… If it really all was just a Myth done by the Brothers to exaggerate how powerful and valuable these things were…then why would the Myth itself be a rather unflattering tragedy for two of the three brothers? – why would the story end in Death’s Favor? That’s where the line gets blurred in my mind; perhaps they started out by boasting that they had in-fact cheated Death to gain these objects – or at least Cadmus and Antioch did. But perhaps that is where their additions to the story ends, but the myth goes on. Perhaps now that everyone believed he was in possession of the most powerful wand ever, someone did covet the wand enough to kill Antioch in his sleep for it… Then with Cadmus – through whatever means it took him to create the resurrection stone, perhaps realizing the futility of his endeavor, and his grief being magnified at only having a shadow of his lost-love, did drive him to commit suicide. Thus – people who were closest to the Brothers might see these deaths and deduce the oddity that two of the three have now died in such tragic circumstances, and attribute it to Death avenging himself against them. Of course, we wouldn’t know for sure unless we got actual detail on how Antioch and Cadmus really died.
I don’t agree with your interpretation of King’s Cross and the reason why Harry didn’t die. I think Dumbledore would have known that the protection from Harry’s mother would still be in effect while the books make it clear it isn’t. Once Harry came of age and left his families home for the last time it’s effect ended. Earlier books made it clear he had to spend the night in the home of a family member for the effect to remain and that had clearly ended. Also, he never spent the night in Voldemorts house. No, I think there are two reason together why he lived. 1 – He was using the Elder Wand (which he was not the master of) to try to kill Harry who was actually the master of said wand. I think it is reasonable that the wand wouldn’t work properly to kill its own master. 2 – Harry was a Horcrux. The blast meant to kill Harry actually killed the portion of Voldemort’s spirit that was inside him. It should be noted also that in King’s Cross Dumbledore seems to give Harry the option of dying, of giving up and passing on. This seems to indicate that the magics involved even with the above two conditions were strong enough to kill Harry, but only if he so desired it. This seems to strengthen point number 1 above. I Harry, the true owner of the Elder Wand, desired to die, then the spell would have worked in that moment and killed him.
Here’s a crazy idea. Harry Potter didn’t die because when he tried to kill him as a baby part of Voldemort’s soul split off into Harry creating a horcrux that Voldemort didn’t know about. When the curse hit Harry it actually hit the horcrux and kill the horcrux which was Voldemort’s soul. Harry Soul was then free to return to his body. Oh wait a minute that’s not a theory that is actually fact because it is written by JK Rowling in the book. That is the reason why Harry didn’t die when the killing curse hit him. And of course we all know the reason Harry didn’t die in The Duel with Voldemort is because the Elder Wand recognized Harry as its master. It never worked for Voldemort. If you read the book you also know that Voldemort figured most of this out already. He just didn’t know that Harry defeated Draco before Voldemort kill Draco.
This is indeed a really really good article But there is something that I am not yet clear about I have Read the series 7 times What I disagree on is the reason harry survived Acc to the theory the sacrifice charm would break when harry turns 17 then even if tom has the curse in him it must have broken when he turned 17. Wait, question: at 8:18 Draco disarmed Dumbledoor, but when Harry took Draco’s wand so he overpowered him, he owned his wand, but when Harry and the DA were practicing disarming, the used EXPELIARMOUS, so when one partner disarmed the other, they owned their partner’s wand, but when partner number 2’s turn came to disarm partner number 1, their wand worked even after their partner was the rightful owner of their wand cuz they disarmed them. And when they fought the death eaters at the Ministry of Magic, same thing happened! Can someone pls explain that???
I have a theory: Dumbledore got ownership from grindelwald when grindelwald took it from grogorovitch. Which then dumbledore defeated grindelwald and got the elder wand Then when james protected both lily and harry from voldemort, dumbledore got the cloak after dumbledore asked to borrow it. Giving him the cloak and protecting from voldemort and knowing he was going to die… Greeting death as an old friend. The stone is tricky, dumbledore got it from the house after it was left abandoned when voldemort hid it there. Which means he got the stone due to the house being abandoned because voldemort killed the people living in it, Its just like the story of the deathly hallows It has flaws but I found it interesting
I actually think that the real reason he is alive is even worse than the theory. It’s just too contrived and convenient that such a series of events could happen and that the brilliant genius of the Wizzarding world did not realize that the magic that saved Harry’s life in the very first book followed him all the way to the last. I prefer to believe the conspiracy theory then the actually convenient truth.
The more I think about it, the more I like the Master of Death theory over the blood which is way too overpowered. Rowling could have made it like the philosophers stone where “only he who wants the stone, but doesn’t want to use it will find it” to instead “only he who has the hollows but accepts that he must die can truly be the Master of Death” as a protection given by the 3 brothers to prevent a tyrant from becoming immortal. Harry didn’t die because he had the hollows and accepted Voldemort must kill him thus making him able to defeat death. He then relinquishes this title by not going back for the stone and returning the wand after he has defeated Voldemort, showing he is a humble guy who just wants to live in peace with his new family. I’m gonna pretend this was the ending.
The resseruction stone was passed down in the family just like the invisibility cloak,right? But how was the resserection stone passed down? Who passed it down? Cadmus killed himself and I guess he didn’t pass it down to anyone when he was alive or did he? He dint have a son did he? I checked everywhere but cannot find how it was passed down….if anyone knows please tell.
i still dont understand why j.k. made such a big story out of the deathly hollows (even naming the last book after them) and then decided to not make them the reason why harry survived.. +why would dumbledore give him the resurection stone and even made sure he would only get it at the moment he already knows he has to die if it hadnt any use to him at all? i mean voldemort had the elderwand so you kinda have to explain what they are but why even mention that together with the other two items they make you the master of death? i totally understand why everbody thought the hollows are the reason behind him not dying.. its really obvious to think that if you didnt read the books.. tbh i think she went with a few things more then really having planed out how it all will come together.. like basilisk venom is able to destroy horcruxes.. i think she came up with the idea of horcruxes very late (at least after the second book) and thus went with the basilisk venom cause the second book wouldnt make sense otherwise.. i love HP but tbh that last movie revealed some things i am not quite into..
The physical disarming of Draco of his own wand…causing the Elder Wand…which Draco never, ever possessed…to become Harry’s.. is an extremely weak plot point. My theory is…the wand was already Harry’s prior to that. Dumbledore did not choose…nor had time…to let him know. The wand chooses the wizard…and Harry literally defeats Dumbledore by giving him poison…which was slowly killing Dumbledore. Snape ended his life just a little prior to the poison doing so. But, I think it was bequeathed to Harry by Dumbledore internally…with the wand’s acceptance of Harry as the next owner. This would tie in very well how the wand moves from wizard to wizard…the original owner was killed by knife in his sleep, and various other owners were killed or murdered as well without there being an outright duel. So…neither Draco nor Snape were never the owner..it was always Harry. Alternatively…Snape was the owner…then Nagini….then Neville. Simply put, a disarming that is ALLOWED wouldn’t transfer wand ownership…wands would flip flop a thousand times in classes if that were the case. 😄
I thought the Protection by his mother was broken when Voldemort used harrys blood to come back to live. He couldnlt touch harry in the first movie so he got burned when harry touches him but in the fourth movie after voldemort got revived he instantly touched harry with out any effect just to make sure the Protection is gone ?!?! or am i wrong? and its only a movie thing?
Harry didnt die because the Elder wand that Voldemort use belongs to Harry. As implied several times in the book and movies – the wand wont kill nor inflict serious injury to its master. Meanwhile it kills the Voldemort soul that lives inside Harry because he(Voldemort) cast it himself, destroying the hocrux.
I do not believe they were related for many if not only one person. Lilly’s love, ricochets Voldermort’s curse. That was her intention, but not that of Voldermorts’. He was not use to Love so knew nothing of Blood magic. Nevertheless, unbeknownst to him, Voldemort own power protected and later connected him to Harry. Im pretty sure Lilly & young Harry’s Blood splashed on Voldemort. SNAPE is the Reason for the Dark Lord’s Downfall. Why? Voldemort had no idea that Harry was seeing his thoughts in his dreams. He had no idea Snape was in love with Lilly. Voldemort was secretly afraid of SNAPE because he could never tell what was going on with SNAPE. Why else did he not know, SNAPE hated him and actually cared a great deal for Lilly’s child, that should have been his. HE cried when he found her dead, and he protected Harry until Haggrid got there to take him to the Dursleys. Also, that’s why Haggrid knew SNAPE was never a threat in Soccer’s Stone. SNAPE’s revenge came full circle when he gave his tears to Harry. It changed everything about him, which is why Harry gave his child Snape’s name. The most successful Wizard in Deathly Hallows was Snape, Besides when Snape cornered Professor Quingley/Voldemort and was trying to save Harry when his broom was bewitched. Voldemort should have figured out where Snape’s loyalties lied right then and there. Right? Okay, I am a writer, and I have been a fan since I read the first book. JK Rowlings is a genius in her imaginations of her characters.
I thought in the book, Harry returned the Elder wand to Dumbledore’s coffin. Didn’t he stand in front of Dumby’s moving painting in the headmaster’s office and tell his plan to the painting and the painting agreed with him? I thought I remember Harry saying once he passed away the power of the wand would be broken forever??
The condition of Lily’s protection was as long as Harry has a home(with a blood relative) he would be protected. But when Riddle took his blood to revive himself he became a became a blood relative of Harry and as we know Voldermort recognised Howarts as his home. Thus Harry still had a home and the protection still lived on. In the forbidden forest when Voldermort casted the killing curse on Harry, it rebounded on the hocrux part of Voldermort in Harry. So basically Voldermort doomed himself 😆…
Listen, knowing the story of the 3 brothers, Dumbledore inadvertently killed James Potter. 6:48 As soon as Dumbledore took “ownership” of the cloak by borrowing it, Death found James Potter. Yes, Voldemort was already heading there, but how different it may have gone, had James had his cloak. Maybe that’s why Dumbledore is so protective/caring towards Harry, the guilt of knowing he may be the reason his parents were killed.

what i don’t understand is why Lily’s protection is not a far more common phenomenon in the world of Harry Potter. how many people have died to protect someone they loved, in all the millennia of warfare. people choosing to die so that others may live, this happens all the time. therefore protections like the one afforded Harry should be abundant and well known, rather than a single unprecedented case Voldemort couldn’t know of or plan for

didnt the ring have the power to protect his owner from death? iirc, the second brother wanted to humiliate death and get the power over death itself, which is why the ring can summon shadows of the dead. that combined with lilys protextion and voldemort turning himself of a kinda-sorta horkrux for harry guaranteed his survival.
I like Voldemorts death in the book more. in the movie he turns into ash, similar to vampires which makes him into something supernatural. In the books after he dies, there is a regular corpse as and it’s even brought into the school and layd in one of the empty rooms, similar to other people killed in the attack on the school. The moment he dies he stops being this mysterious supernatural threat.
So i think Dumbledor never mastered death. He had the elder wand, held the invisibility cloak; and gave it up to Harry. He then got the ring but didn’t control the stone due to the horcrux, so at most Dumbledor only had 2 deathly hallows truely under his control at once making harry the first (as far as we know) true master of death. And the reason i think Dumbledor was only able to talk to harry after the forest because he intended to wait and talk to harry
The protection part being in Voldemort finally makes sense to me. Idk how the timeline works out between the three brothers and Azkaban island but I wonder if Death was a dementor as they look the same and if the whole part where Dumbledore didn’t believe that death actually created the deathly hallows but instead the brothers were the ones who created them which could mean that the hooded figure in a black cloak at the bridge could have been a dementor that the three brothers created the deathly hallows in order to defeat the next time they came across the dementor
