What Do “Majcom Family Days” Mean?

The ACC family day memo outlines the authority to add additional family days to Wing Commands (CCs) or equivalent. However, DHA operates under different rules, prohibiting MTFs from being closed for more than three consecutive days. Family days are still a thing, but DHA policy prohibits MTFs from being closed for more than three consecutive days.

The four-day weekend is typically tacking a family day onto a three-day weekend. If a command doesn’t do it, it’s up to the commander, but do they give family days otherwise? It’s important to think safety first during family days and holiday activities. Use your Wingman, apply common sense, always drive safely, and continually wear your seat belts.

The Major Air Command (MAJCOM) Wings of the United States Air Force (USAF) have existed as separate wings since the summer of 1948. From 1948 to 1991, some major commands were both lead majcoms and component majcoms (C-majcom). A family day is an extra holiday pass given by higher leadership to a large group of members, usually hooked to a major holiday weekend. A family day is literally just a free day off given by whatever command you fall into (Air Combat Command, Air Mobility Command, etc.).

Do Weekends Count As Leave Days In The Military?

Members of the Reserve and National Guard are not charged military leave for non-duty days, which include weekends and holidays, during their military service. Military leave generally refers to the permission to depart from a unit for a specified duration. According to regulations, if a service member's leave encompasses a holiday or weekend, those days do not count against their leave balance. For instance, when taking leave from Tuesday to Sunday, the Saturday and Sunday do not count as leave days. Pass days can’t exceed 72 hours without proper approval, but they can facilitate long weekends. If leave starts on a holiday, that day is charged as leave, while if it ends on a holiday, it is not.

Service members typically earn 30 days of paid leave annually, accruing at a rate of 2. 5 days per month. Weekend days and holidays are excluded from the computation of the 15-day regular leave ceiling and do not count as leave days. However, duty assignments may occasionally require service members to work on weekends or holidays. Having leave policies that do not charge for non-duty days promotes morale and allows military personnel to better manage their time off. Thus, weekends and holidays remain non-chargeable, supporting the well-being of the members.

What Is A Family Day In The Air Force?

Family Day offers airmen a chance to engage their families and friends in understanding their contributions to the Air Force mission. This day off is typically associated with federal holidays, emphasizing safety and relaxation for servicemembers and their families during these breaks. The upcoming Federal Holidays for FY 2024 include New Year’s Day on January 1, Martin Luther King Day on January 15, and Presidents Day on February 19, among others. When traveling outside the local area, leave may be required, but some commands might allow it to be counted as leave status, permitting travel. A family day is essentially a free day off provided by the command, such as Air Combat Command or Air Mobility Command. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) protects employees needing time off for family or medical reasons, allowing up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave annually while maintaining group health benefits as if they were still working.

This includes specific entitlements for military caregiver leave, which can extend to 26 workweeks. FMLA leave can be taken all at once or intermittently, with holidays not counting against the 12-week total. Following Family Day, graduation occurs the next day, usually on a Thursday unless a Federal Holiday intervenes. Graduating Soldiers are granted a one-day on-post pass for the afternoon on Family Day, allowing visitors to leave and re-enter the post, although Soldiers cannot leave post.
