Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Baumfree in 1797, was the second youngest in a slave family of ten or twelve children. Her mother was known as “Mau-mau Bett”, and she had at least 10 siblings. The exact number of her brothers and sisters is unknown, but she was the youngest, save one. Sophia informed her that her brother Michael was in the city, and when she introduced him to Isabella, he informed her that their sister Nancy had been living in.

Sojourner Truth was an American abolitionist and activist for African-American civil rights, women’s rights, and alcohol temperance. She endured slavery in New York from 1797 to 1828 when she was emancipated based on her faith. Her father, who was tall and straight, gave him the name “Bomefree” (low Dutch for tree), which he usually went by.

Sojourner Truth was born into slavery, and some sources report that she had at least 13 children, which would mean she had 12 James and Elizabeth “Mau Mau Bet” Baumfree. She was one of many children born to James and Elizabeth Baumfree. Colonel Truth, named Isabella by her parents James and Elizabeth, had a dozen siblings, all of whom, except for her youngest brother, had been sold off at a Sojourner Truth, the Grimké Sisters, and Harriet Jacobs were all part of the same abolitionist circle.

In her autobiography, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, she stated that her birth name was Isabella Baumfree and she was born into slavery. She had at least 10 brothers and sisters, but she didn’t get to know all of them. Sojourner Truth was a leader in the fight to end slavery and spoke out against injustices affecting various communities.
