4.5 rating based on 135 ratings

In The Sims 4, players can take family leave during pregnancy and after the baby’s birth. To activate this option, use the Household option on your phone and select Family Leave. This allows your Sim to take time off work during and shortly after pregnancy. However, the settings for parental leave are not intuitive, as the game already grants leave to female Sims.

To enable maternity leave only after the baby is born, players can use MasterController to remove accumulated days off from any source. With the latest game update, Sims should be able to take family leave using the option on their phones under the career tab after receiving the notification that family is born. Sims can become pregnant in three ways: natural way, intervention of science, and adoption.

The natural way involves Sims becoming pregnant when they Woohoo or Try for Baby. With SP, you can change the remaining maternity leave for a sim that has already had a baby and leave the default leave settings alone. Gamers can activate this option by navigating to “Household” and selecting “Family Leave” on their smartphone. The pregnant Sim continues to receive payment even during their family leave.

Both parents have the choice to take family leave before and after the birth of the baby. Gamers can activate this option by navigating to “Household” and selecting “Family Leave” on their smartphone. The choice to take family leave before and after the birth of the baby is open to both parents.

On October 9, 2023, a level 9 Actress was stuck on family leave with her child being a toddler. She had no option on her phone to get off it. MasterController can be used to remove days off granted to a particular individual sim or group of sims for any reason, including when her child is now a toddler.

In summary, players in The Sims 4 can take family leave during pregnancy and after the baby’s birth. Players can activate this option by navigating to “Household” and selecting “Family Leave”.

Do Sims Get Paid For Family Leave?

In The Sims 4, Sims receive payment for all days taken on Family Leave, reflecting a system similar to real-life parental leave. Both parents can utilize this leave before and after the child's birth, though it’s optional and not required to be taken immediately. Players are encouraged to use this leave to assist their partner in caring for the new baby. Family Leave ensures continued payment without losing progress in the game, and both parents can partake in this benefit as soon as the pregnant Sim reaches the third trimester, which triggers a notification about the leave option.

If a Sim opts for Family Leave, it is treated like vacation time, so they don’t lose any skills or advancements during this period. While family leave can be paid or unpaid, this gameplay mechanic allows for flexibility, allowing players to manage time effectively while caring for newborns. Players may also choose to use vacation days to extend their leave further. The structure of Family Leave in The Sims 4 mirrors the complexities of real-world policies, with features such as job protections and earning continuing income during maternity or paternity leave. With this system, players can experience realistic family dynamics and responsibilities while maximizing their Sims' growth and skills at home.

Can Sims Take Maternity Leave?

During gameplay, Sims can take vacation days off work, and maternity leave becomes available once they reach the third trimester of pregnancy. Players receive a notification when the third trimester begins, indicating the option to take family leave. It's essential for a pregnant Sim to attend work during the first two trimesters, as family leave is unavailable at that time. However, players can use their smartphone to request family leave or vacation time. This process must be repeated as leave is not compulsory but can be voluntarily taken.

Parental leave is an option for both parents, and Sims can request it even after the baby is born. In "The Sims 4," the leave duration and eligibility may vary based on the Sim's job level and other factors. Some players prefer to take family leave after the baby is born and utilize vacation days afterward.

Players sometimes encounter issues where the family leave option does not appear in the phone settings, despite receiving notifications. In such cases, mods like MasterController can be used to manage leave and resolve related issues. Gamers can choose to alternate work schedules between parents or manipulate leave durations depending on their gameplay preferences. Ultimately, understanding leave dynamics allows for a smoother transition in managing family life within "The Sims 4." As family leaves are not mandatory, players have flexibility in deciding how and when to manage their Sims' work-life balance following parenthood.

What Happens When A SIM Becomes Pregnant

What Happens When A SIM Becomes Pregnant?

When a Sim becomes pregnant in The Sims, they experience various moodlets, both positive and negative, and receive paid maternity leave. Sims can give birth at home or in the hospital once labor begins. Pregnancy introduces physical changes, like increased body size and faster-declining motives, and was first featured in The Sims 2, continuing in each sequel. To get pregnant, Sims must "Try for Baby," though there is a possibility of failure. In The Sims 4, the feature is detailed, and players can add Infants to households without trying for a baby.

A baby born to a pregnant Sim will possess the Grimborn Trait, marking a unique birthmark and longer life. Pregnant Sims will notice weight gain over 25 Sim hours and will reach the third trimester within 7 days, when the baby bump becomes pronounced.

Sims can become pregnant through natural means, science interventions, or adoption. The chances of natural pregnancy during WooHoo or "Try for Baby" are about 50%. Female Sims are unable to conceive three days before becoming elders. While aging can be turned off, pregnancies and births still function normally. Notification of pregnancy occurs on the same lot, and for those on different lots, a notification appears later. Each trimester brings a new happy moodlet that tracks progress.

After pregnancy confirmation, weight gain becomes noticeable. A young adult or adult female Sim can conceive from a "Try for Baby" interaction with a male of varying ages, making family dynamics a fun and central aspect of gameplay.

Family Leave can be requested starting from the third trimester for the pregnant Sim, while the other parent can start taking leave only after the baby’s birth.

To disable maternity leave during pregnancy in Sims 3, access the settings via: General > By Tunable XML > Sims3. Gameplay. ActorSystems > Pregnancy > kPregnantDaysOff > 0. To manage maternity leave post-pregnancy, first enable it by going to NRaas > Story Progression > General Options > Options: Pregnancy > Pregnancy: Maternity Leave > True. Then, to turn it off, navigate to NRaas > Story Progression > General Options > Options: Pregnancy > Maximum Maternity Leave > 0. Using NRaas and Retuner, you can customize maternity leave for Sims or households, but MasterController mainly adjusts days off already granted. To change the number of maternity days for a Sim with a newborn, select the Sim, then NRaas > Story Progression > General Options > Options: Pregnancy > Maximum Maternity Leave. For period adjustments, simply select the appropriate settings through NRaas options and consider family leave choices post-birth.

  • It would be very interesting if Maxis changed the babies of the Sims 4! They’re just objects. They wanted them to be more “free” equals the Sims 2 and 3. It would be nice if they had to change clothes, bathe in a sink or bathtub, could teach them to walk and also that their skins be changed! Seriously, the Sims 4 babies look more like those dolls you buy in children’s stores! I hope you have that in the future…

  • Carl, I seriously don’t know how the living hell you managed to get triplets. I would seriously be 1 hell of a happy camper if I got triplets, but I never did got those. You are right about 1 thing. Have the pregnant sim eat carrots, listen to alternative music & you will get twin boys. ……well I did that & got the pregnant sim to read nothing but toddler books & kids network website in order to get more than 1 baby. ….which that method to get twins has worked. As for triplets….again I have no idea how you did that. I seriously wish I knew. I know I would have so much big time fun with that. If by some chance you do know, please do share. By the way, I’m playing this game on PS4.

  • Good article but its a bit disappointing that you failed to mention that male sims can get pregnant as well. And I’m not talking about aliens. I’m sure that’s covered in the aliens article or something. With CAS the sim can be male or female, then you have the option to choose whether they can impregnate, be impregnated, or are sterile. This isn’t attached to sex, physical appearance(masculine or feminine), or whether they stand up or sit down when using the bathroom. This means that as long as the sim has been customized that way, male sims can get pregnant and female sims can impregnate.
