They don’t cost much but could give so much more. Imagine a yearly painting auction or other assets that they own that have been given to them. ( They have plenty of items and assets to chose from that do not belong to the country ) The money could go up for a chance windfall for several poor families to possibly win. Yes there is a lot of history and beautiful castles and things. What makes the difference in going to the UK is the fact that they are still used as residences, by the royals. There’s always the chance that you may get a glimpse of the Queen cruising out of Windsor castle or something. There’s the royal weddings that you can watch as they go past in their carriage. There’s the changing of the guard etc.Somehow a palace with functioning royalty is much more interesting then without. I’m afraid without the working monarchy it would be much less desirable to visit. The climate is terrible, it’s not exotic or exciting in other ways like France etc You don’t have a warm climate and beautiful beaches to laze on.. Yes there are countries that have castles and palaces that people go to visit without a monarchy, but that’s because these countries have much more to offer as well.
