I must be missing something because I loved the movie. I expected it to be a little more PG so that wasn’t a big deal, the plot did drag on a bit I’ll give you that. But I feel they nailed the family esthetic and even turned it up a bit (the exorcism references were great) and it was meta with a message. Deserves at least a B IMO
Finished the movie. I was under the impression that the dark humor would just be gross out humor due to your statement at 1:14 but the dark humor went above and beyond just that. It was genuinely funny seeing implied death being played off as a joke, the bizarre physics of the character animation, the blasphemy of social media, and the general awkwardness of the Adams family. I was prepared for disappointment but the movie actually gave made a good laugh.
I could not find any fault in this movie except that it should taken maybe another 10 minutes to set up the plot and conflict and maybe the voice over could have been a little better or more emphatic. It sounded a bit subdued. Or else this is a sweet charming film. I had low hopes for this movie. Not even do to the character designs. Just the trailor really showed the comedy to be really generic. The reason the last series life action series was so loved was the full on weirdness, the unabashed themness. Combine this with the amazing passionate romance of the parents, then we get this. Yeaa….this was a weird one. I liked the first 15 minutes or so when Morticia and Gomez got married and found their mansion, and the kids interacting at the beginning with all their dark humor torture of one another. Then the house renovation plot started and it just got stupid. Good enough just to see the family again in this unique Animation style…but definitely all over the place. I agree it felt like one of those cheap Halloween TV movies like Scary Godmother.

I had basically the exact opposite reaction as you. I liked it. I think it would have made a cute pilot for a revival animated TV show. But they got the Addams pretty well depicted IMO. The character designs were HORRIBLE! I’m not even talking about the Addams family, the human characters looked so awful! The main girl that talks to Wednesday made me feel so uncomfortable with her design. The rest of the “normal people” didn’t look much better. I put off perusal this movie because of this review. But I did finally watch it and it’s was helarious! There’s this one part- I almost choked I was laughing so hard. Not true. They DO pay off the Malsaka-whatever-it-was-called Sword display towards the end, and it wasn’t for nothing, because it showed Gomez that Puglsey had to be himself, and not be bogged down by trying to stick to establishment. That was the theme throughout the entire film, and it ties into Wednesday’s storyline, and the overall story of who the Addams’ really are.
I adore the two 90’s films. (The second was, admittedly, not as good as the first save for the Thanksgiving Day play…but it was still good.) Together, they form a nearly perfect gothic comedy. The acting was great, the comedy is still pretty poignant, and the set design of the Addams family mansion had a certain macabre beauty that likely even made both Guillermo Del Toro and Tim Burton swoon when they first saw it. This version was never going to be the one for me. In point-of-fact, both my wife and I were rather repulsed by trailers when we first saw them. And we couldn’t help but wonder why they made this. Quite frankly, if we wanted to introduce our kids to dark humor (and we do), we’d just show them the originals. They’re still fairly kid friendly. Even in all of their craziness. This new “babyfied” version of the material just seems as useless as it seems unfunny to me. Girl Scout: “Is this (lemonade) made from real lemons?” Wednesday: “Yes.” Gril Scout: “…Are you SURE it’s made from real lemons?” Pugsley: “Yes.” Girl Scout: “I’ll tell you what; I’ll buy a cup if you buy a box of my delicious Girl Scout cookies. Just saw this, thank god I didn’t pay for the ticket since I was offered, but we were all bored. An interesting thing I’ve noticed with films like these that use old IP’s and concepts is…Modern music and ideas always seem to be a red flag for what is to come. When they started making modern references and using more modern songs (Even Snoop Dogg from the 00’s with Drop It Like It’s Hot), I had a very bad feeling. What sucks most is. This could have been a good movie, I got the feeling some people on the writing team were pretty familiar with the characters, but whoever lead this project didn’t care as much as they did. The idea of them fighting someone with such a clean image that is pushing against there gothic and strange image could have worked….With better planning and more time working on it. Oh well…

I agree; it was bland. Some jokes were funny…but they just can’t save a whole 80 minute movie with a ham-fisted “it’s good to be yourself!” plot we’ve seen over and over. For older kids, I’d recommend Paranorman, Coraline, Corpse Bride, or Monster House…for ones that scare easily, Hotel Transylvania. For adult animation fans…all of those films are superior to this reboot for being funnier, spookier, and more creative. More subtle messages too.
I think you’re forgetting that this movie is a for the kids of today not the kids of the 90s. So I think that’s why you felt like you were just ready for the movie instead of the buildup that you talked about where it was like they were letting you in on The Addams family. This is the perfect place to get some help!! I would REALLY appreciate some ideas. My daughter is very interested in scary movies. Thrillers, not really horrors, maybe? I showed her The Sixth Sense, Jaws, The Village, they are not scary enough. I’m at a loss on where to continue from here. The movie was ok as Chris said it felt like a TV movie, but I feel the addams were slightly off characters. The addams never really cared much if they were though of as different, and what the first addams family do with villans is they invite them and cheer them on; mainly due to fact that they try to kill them which they love and think is brilliant which they love. I think the theme fo the movie should have been just about not caring about appearances or judgements. Instead of the not subtle message about tolerance and while its a good message. its become a bit overdone and has to be done creatively like zootopia or the first wreck it ralph.
My theory is that they are a cursed bloodline, possibly related to Cain. Cursed with immortality and invulnerability and stamina. That explains their care free attitude playing with dangerous weapons and deathly situations. Also their obsession with death and decay. Something natural to everything that they can’t partake in.

Thought it was decent, the house was great and the characters were mostly pretty good. I really liked the Lurch and Thing scenes and even just the Lurch bits in this. Maybe some kind of B, didn’t watch any previews, and while I don’t like it better than what already exists, I don’t think it was terrible
Oh I see what they were going for. It seems to me they didn’t realize what they were doing. They were showing from someone’s point of view that didn’t understand the acceptance of the weird. It’s a good idea but the movie didn’t explore the complexity as to why someone is having trouble understanding or why they think that way in the first place. In comparison to A Beautiful Day in the neighborhood. They both didn’t really explore the complexity enough as to why someone thinks that way. That’s the issue of the movie. That’s why it fails but, it’s a good idea.
I just saw it and thought it was delightful. Yes, there are some jokes/gags that run on the more childish side, but jokes for the adults too. Like, thing looking at his foot “pron”. And I don’t know if it’s just me, but I picked up on a bit of queer coding that I was interesting. But perhaps could have been explored more. Also, my theater has tons of kids in it and they were engaged throughout. I thought the cast was good, in particular Chloe Moretz and Charlize Theron. Yes, the movie immediately felt like a kids tv show. It felt cramped and very flat with the story and felt episodic in nature. I usually enjoy most animated movies due to subtle silliness thrown in for adults, but this movie just felt quite dull. Very few jokes and funny moments landed at all with the whole audience. Was surprised, because most animated movies anymore are at least quite funny, but this really missed the mark on quite a few levels. I do agree that if this exact same movie was made live action and maybe pg13 for just more over the top gross out humor then it would have been quite good. They went animated to keep costs down and it’s very obvious.
Still going to watch it and besides I’ve been wanting to see more Animated Movies than Live-Action Films since Disney & other Studios have been pumping up way too much of it than Animated movies nowadays. I actually can’t remember the last animated movie for all ages that was truly infuential and could be enjoyed by everyone. It’s like that kind of craftmanship is not there anymore and you have to depend Pixar is having a good day. I guess people will say How to Train your Dragon but I didn’t see the third one since I didn’t like the sequel to the original.
Let’s face it, the Addams Family is kind of a hard concept to adapt for film. Even the 90s movies kind of had mixed results. The whole thing basically hinges on one joke. They like creepy shit, but they’re still good people and they’re happy, despite what everyone else thinks of them. What can work in a fun little sitcom can’t easily be stretched out to feature length. I’ll still probably see this movie because the characters are fun. It was very soft for such a strong family. The Addams family is extremely unique and has some many opportunities… but they don’t use them here, since they made the movie extremely childish, lacking the dark and weird part that makes this family unique. The style of this animation didn’t help for me, it seems like an average Disney/Nickelodeon/Illumination movie, in the sense that it’s trying to be dark or mature, but lacks the balls to do it, so they just add some dark colors to a few characters and that’s it. BOTH of the live action “Addams Family” movies had more interesting plotlines and took full advantage of the weirdness. This was a bunch of set pieces stuck with the same plot as… dozens of other flicks, really. How many times have we seen the ‘person wants to drive out protagonists to sell land’ plot? That was cliché before anyone knew the meaning of cliché! It’s a friggin Scooby-Do standard trope!
Honestly, The Addams Family has never been very good in any iteration. The Munsters is and always will be where its at. I’ m glad Hollywood hasn’t raped it yet. With their help along with the internet, the overly washed masses already took from me: Zombie Flicks, RPG’S, Cos Play, Slasher movies, Fantasy novels, most comics, and various other aspects of nerd shit. Once upon a time you were either thought of as an outright freak or looked at like no one knew what you were talking about (they didn’t) when you talked about these things. I know I sound like an old man here and in a way I guess should be happy. This…appropriation has gotten many things made with high production levels that never would have otherwise. It’s just a bit like everyone discovering a band after they’ve made 5 albums, meanwhile you’ve been spreading the word the whole time, and jamming that stuff since the first EP.
Man the designs for this version are a mixed bag. Most look okay but Fester and (especially) Wednesday look quite bad and ugly. Maybe the designers wanted to evoke a bit of a more repulsive vibe with the designs but maybe it’d been better if they just modernized the looks from the past animated versions
You know what i was thinking while perusal this the other day? like this look more like a TV show pilot rather than a movie, because if you think about it its like “you dont want all the weirdness right away dont you? you want it slowly and one at the time” kinda way of doing stuff and also that woman is your typical TV cartoon show villian rather than well an Addams Family villian to say the least. Compare it to the “girlfriend” of Uncle Fester, what could make this family more disturbed and more afraid than being a total freak or a creep? being totally “normal” and if you think about it this its also expected and very predictable but it really worked with the thematic of the characters, their are weird and they love creepy and fucked up stuff but if one of them suddendly becomes “normal” its now a monster, an abomination to their beliefs, she was pretty twisted and quite disturbed because she had some really fucked up childhood which made her a very nasty person in her adulthood so she was “one of them” at the end but what she did wrong was to betray its family something the Addams while being creepy and pretty twisted respect above all. This villian is just “i just want to get all the money and this people are in the way so lets make people hate them and i will be very rich in no time” in comparision is quite cliche yeah but the girlfriend of Uncle Fester was this way because she grew up being this twisted, she kinda complements the Addams in a way but this one its just plain bad becuase “you have to hate it and that’s it because the Addams are the good guys” and neither of the old movies made the addams look like the “good guys” because the focus was to showcase that its good to be weird and different even if other people thinks its “bad”.
