4.0 rating based on 130 ratings

A family tree, also known as a pedigree chart, is an illustrative diagram with mini photos, word art, and other components demonstrating family history and relationships in a document. Microsoft Word offers many functionalities that assist in the writing of genealogies, such as using the ahnentafel and Register projects. These projects help kids learn how to research subjects online and design diagrams, teaching new words like ancestors, roots, and surnames.

To create a family tree in Microsoft Word, you need to use the Hierarchy SmartArt option. This will add a box for a person where you can insert members’ names, details, and images. You can include more shapes to before, after, above, and below to create a family tree. You can choose to download a family tree template or use the hierarchy function to create a family tree from scratch. After downloading the template or creating the hierarchy, you will only need to enter your family’s information into the Online Search field. If you must use Word, you should use either the Family History Book or the 6 Generation.

To create a detailed and straightforward family tree in Microsoft Word and Edraw Max, follow these steps:

  2. Open a new document in Word and select the “Insert” tab. Then, click on the “Shapes” button. From there, you will see a “Shapes” button.
  3. To create from scratch, open MS Word and create a document. Click Insert at the ribbon menu. Select Illustrations followed by SmartArt. Choose the desired layout and size.
  4. Open the Block Diagram template and drag block shapes onto the drawing page.
  5. Save the file and save it as a new document.
  6. Use the Family History Book or the 6 Generation to create a family tree for your genealogy project.

How To Add A Family Tree In Microsoft Word?

To create a family tree in Microsoft Word, start by clicking the "Add Shape" button located at the top left of the screen to insert a new box into your tree. Select this box and type in your mother’s name. You can easily add additional information, such as birth dates and places, by clicking on the relevant family member. Decide whether to open a new or existing document, ensuring there is enough space on the page for the family tree (also known as a pedigree chart), which visually represents family history and relationships.

To utilize SmartArt for your family tree, navigate to the "Insert" tab, select "SmartArt," and then choose the "Hierarchy" option to create a visual structure. You can add images and details to each box and expand the diagram as necessary. If you're looking for pre-made templates, Microsoft Word and Excel offer various family tree templates suitable for all ages. Importing genealogy research from sites like FamilySearch can enhance your tree. With these steps, creating a family tree becomes a fun and meaningful educational activity that allows family members to connect with their lineage creatively.
