There was nothing ever inherently wrong with the family guy formula, but at some point, evolution of their comedy became necessary. Unfortunately for the creators and viewers, I think the family guy style of humor is not something easily built upon. You can try to strengthen storylines and create more meaningful moments all you want but at the end of the day you’re still relying on a very inflexible approach to their humor
I feel like Family Guy has faded in quality because it just made every character so unlikable. In the early seasons, Peter was an idiot. But he wasn’t malicious. Lois was kind of flat. But she wasn’t so easy to hate. But in later seasons, it’s like every character has lost any redeeming values they once had. It’s not like It’s Always Sunny, which never attempted to make their characters likable in the first place. He’s said he wants it to end so he can focus on other projects but because its still successful the network keeps it around. so I wonder if he’s trying to sabotage it. My MAIN problem with Family Guy is that the stories have really gone bad. I remember this episode where Chris has an anger problem and it turns out that it’s just being used as an introduction to another story. Also, the cut-aways before do make sense because, first, it’s nostalgic, and second, it’s what you’d think what would happen if that scenario actually happen. But the cut-aways now is just random things being thrown in together, nothing makes sense.
I think family is so stupid and lazy but that’s why it works. I don’t want to sit down and have a show tell me what to think or have me reflect on todays awful society. I just wanna be numb and laugh my ass off. It’s not that deep. Why can’t it just be stupid and rip at eveyone? It doesn’t have to be some out of the box revolutionary discovery.
This newest season has been more family oriented and I really like it. The kids and Peter have been getting along. Meg has been treated like everyone else and has even gotten her props. I think another major factor in why Family Guy is hated is also it’s lack of constancy. Particularly, when it comes to its characters. The characters in family guy flip flop in personality all the time depending on what jokes or stories the writers want to do. One minute, Peter is the archetype sitcom dad who’s bumbling and incompetent, but has a good heart and cares about his family, the next he’s basically a remorseless jerk who doesn’t care for his friends or even his own family. Brian griffin is sometimes the voice of reason straight man to everyone’s insanity one moment and then the next he’s a pretentious, self satisfied jerk. Lois is a caring mom and level head to Peter’s shenanigans, the next she’s a lustful, violent and petty woman who’s abusive to her children. And I don’t even think the writers ever bothered to give Chris a personality outside of being a dumb, naïve teenager. In any great comedy, especially situational comedy, the humour should start with the characters themselves and how they would react in a situation. If the characters are just being used as empty shells for the writers to reel what ever jokes they want regardless of which characters is telling them, that’s just bad comedy writing.
Honestly I haven’t watched Family Guy in a while but thought to jump back in with the last season that just went by (season 20), and I genuinely believe there’s been a jump up in quality just between season 19 and 20. The cutaways are less obtrusive, the jokes didn’t feel crass or lowest-common-denominator. Not every episode was a banger, but I got the feeling the writers finally decided to shake up the formula a bit and I’d like to see more of that going forward.
i’ll always respect seth macfarlane as a creator because you cannot deny his talent as a voice actor, writer, and even a vocalist. despite family guy starting off as almost a simpson’s knockoff may have stunted it, but once it came into its own, i think was when it really started to shine. the cutaways were what made it different than simpsons, it had this air of randomness and that gave it charm. but over the years it became so big that eventually it realized it was set for life. the show didn’t need to be innovative, funny, or new anymore. and it began to devolve until eventually it became what it was today- a show where everyone in it is a psychopath and evil and the jokes are much less funny and the cutaways are just random for the sake of being random, they don’t have the same charm as they used to. they used to be more complex jokes, more than just “this is worse than that one time that something wacky and bad happened” or “this is more crazy than when this crazy thing happened”. they used to be more complex jokes with better references. now it’s just “this is formula, we do it cause we have to and we put no effort into it” i’ve always found it ironic that the show’s intro talks about good old family values, and at the beginning of the show’s run, this was a clear joke. like peter and lois cared about their kids more than they seem to now, but it was funny then cause there were the occasional things happening that made that statement ironic. now it’s still ironic, but it’s not funny anymore because that’s 100% what you expect from the show.
I think in general people take family guy way too seriously. The show doesn’t respect itself that much and neither do it’s creators, and that’s how I’ve always seen it. I love old family guy and new family guy. It’s just there to try and make you laugh, and if it misses whatever. You just cherish when it hits instead of whining when it doesn’t. I have no problem with the offensive humor or the Dark jokes. I think that should be allowed in this medium. My problem is that they are always trying to make every situation into a joke. Like having the most jokes per episode will make it better somehow. I get that it is a comedy, but sometimes jokes pack harder of a punch when there is some breathe time and some real moments in between to supplement the comedy.
I don’t think it can be underestimated how much Family Guy changed after its revival (with that change increasing over time). It’s basically unrecognisable now. As well as being more character-focussed and less reliant on stereotypes (see early Joe, Mort and Cleveland), it used a lot less cut-away gags, and those it did use were usually clever ones, messing with audience expectations. Eg. Peter talking about the time he hit a deer with his car, cut to him having rear-ended a driver who was a talking deer. It also had a lot more absurdism that WASN’T cut-away gags. To me, that’s what set it apart from The Simpsons. Jokes like Joe’s trampoline not working due to a power cut, or Peter trying to distract an angry mob by pointing off-screen and shouting “Erm… look over there! It’s Bigfoot”. Pan to Bigfoot saying “Hey, this isn’t about me”. Whether you find them funny or not (and you probably don’t based on my written versions of them), it’s undeniable that this is a style of humour that The Simpsons can’t really do outside of Halloween specials. Same with KotH and Bob’s Burgers. It made Family Guy unique. Then the show came back, and it was crasser, relied more on offensive stereotypes, had more cut-aways that were less plot-relevant or clever, and the absurdism mostly drifted away outside of ‘lol random’. Basically I feel they’re two different shows, with a few seasons in between (4 to maybe 6 or 7) that straddle both styles.
I think an issue with Family Guy became that it appeared like they couldn’t find their identity or forgot it. It’s weird just how different seasons 1-3 is compared to like season 10. Gags are fine for FG. It’s something the show has always had, but there came a point where it was way more random and out of place than ever. Old FG cutaway gags fit into the story and whatever the conversation was about. New FG just started doing overly random stuff that just didn’t fit well. Some cutaways lasting almost 2mins. The other issue is that FG made every character insufferable in some way. Making them terrible people but also trying to get you to feel bad for them at the end of every episode. They made Brian completely unlikeable and then had the episode where Quagmire goes after him with a speech which felt weird to listen to because Quagmire is a rapist lol. Listening to Quagmire have this holier than thou attitude towards Brian was weird considering who is character is. You have Quagmire the perverted rapist, Brian the douchebag atheist bad father, Lois that started caring less about her kids and husband, same thing for Peter. All of the characters turned negative. Seahorse Seashell Party is one of their worst episodes because of the piss poor message about Meg standing up for herself and how she needs to take the abuse to keep the family dynamic going. Idk who wrote that episode, but that was such a lowball message to give. Screams Of Silence is also another. Lois making fun of that woman in person and laughing at her.
I’m so sick of people looking for character development in shows like Family Guy. I’ve loved Family Guy for 20 years and it’s a perfect show to forget about your day, turn your brain off for 20 mins, smile, and laugh. I’ve never once thought, “hmm I wish Peter would be a better dad, or husband.” If I want that stuff I go to drama’s or anime for character development and good storytelling. I don’t watch GoT, HOTD, or Better Call Saul for there jokes. So why would I watch an edgy comedy for character development and good storytelling?
FG is one of those shows you discover in your teens and because it’s more adult you can’t help but watch it. Part of me believes I watch it for nostalgia, but truthfully, I find it to be a fun show. If I want something more adult than the Simpson’s, less commanding than South Park and not as random as Robot Chicken, it’s the perfect dark humour fast food. Although American Dad has better character and story driven continuity and Roger is much more funnier than Brian, in a sense we need FG to be the daft and offensive show it is.

The first few seasons of family guy were so good because you can actually see Peter as a human with morals and feelings and love for his family. And having Brian there as his conscience bounced off well with the comedy in the show. But since then, the humour has had no effort put into it and Brian is only remotely relevant in the episodes of adventure with him and Stewie
I was obsessed with Family Guy growing up, but season 7 is where I started to fall off. And well, I think it’s because of the reasons you mentioned in this article. I started to see what the critics were talking about. How the show was edgy and shocking for its own sake, but not really having a point behind it (though the few times they did try, those episodes kinda sucked). Mind you, I was a teen back when I watched Family Guy, and perusal something that was willing to be edgy was all I needed to like it. Though nowadays, I like my comedy to have some kind of a point. Not to mention shock value diminishes over time, because life happens. I’d also say it’s due to the characters just becoming unlikable over time; just so they could try to be more shocking, I suppose. Sure, Peter was a dimwit, but in earlier seasons, he still loved his family at the end of the day. Nowadays, I have to wonder how the man still even has a family, and hasn’t died from sheer stupidity. Lois went from being a voice of reason, who occasionally made mistakes, to being abusive and standoffish with her kids. All of the characters have become some flavor of asshole, to where they don’t really feel all that distinct from each other, and they just don’t feel like the same characters…. Family Guy really is a franchise zombie at this point. It’s clearly dead, but it still shambles on, despite this….
One day out of curiosity (and being stoned), I watched an old season 1 episode of FG. It was weirdly charming, and it was still charming when I watched it again sober. I’d never intentionally watched Family Guy before then, I’d only heard and seen gross potty humor and bad things about it, but that season 1 episode was some genuinely funny stuff. Very sad that this is the show that keeps going and decaying while good stuff gets cancelled or delayed

But South Park feels to be in a league of its own, not many animated shows compare. You either love South Park or hate South Park, not to mention it’s kept it’s charm through the years. Family Guy pre cancellation was actually really funny and had character development as well to the point that between the second and third season they really hit their stride. After Family Guy was cancelled, all the focus went to American Dad and I feel that the surprise reinstatement caused resources to be split between both shows and American Dad took priority because it was newer whereas Family Guy already had an established fan base at that point. It’s a shame because you could tell after a certain point they were really phoning it in. Most series can’t keep pulling it together after being canceled and bounced around like Futurama.
If i gotta rank my animated favorite showsoff the top of my head King of the hill as it actually does continue having characters grow up like Nancy breaking it off with John and Luanne becoming a mother and growing up from the start. South Park where it has some bad episodes or seasons here and there it’s still overall good being able to make them at a high speed. Even though I’m not a Family Guy fan, I’ll admit its earlier seasons were fine (I don’t love them, I don’t hate them) since the characters were still likable, they didn’t go overboard with cutaway gags, and Meg was not a punching bag. It’s the post-revival seasons that keep me from enjoying it (that and the fact that I think it’s only pushing buttons just for the sake of doing so).

I actually like perusal those “Family Guy Funny Moments” compilations occasionally. I also love the episodes that do something ambitious(mostly the ‘Brian & Stewie’ ones). Granted, I’m not far from the minimum age to watch it and I can excuse limited-animation and even animatic cartoon styles, but I don’t think it’s all that bad. Gross out’s not my favorite at all, but it’s funny when it isn’t that for me.
Family Guy humour is based reality compiled into sacarsm hence why it’s controversial sometime. But, it’s not just humour. There’s also the element of narrative telling you to learn forgiveness and give someone another chance to be better. It’s a good doctrine considering it’s a cartoon that kids are able to enjoy.
Honestly like the Simpsons it lacks any reason to really exist and the jokes are just flat being shock humor and cut away gags that just take up time. American dad. King of the hill and bob’s burgers knows how to keep a plot better grounded so when something is shocking you feel the impact more as it’s not just a Gag and things return to normal afterwards. Plus American dad knows how to use thier punching bag better in Claus as he actually gets wins a few times to make it more than just a meg situation as well as tell fun storylines that give each of the cast either something to do or go to new places. The cast shrunk but that didn’t stop it from being fun like the Christmas episodes or adding rogu and Jeff to the main cast which look at family guy failing at Vinny Also it ages horribly as family guy wants to play real world political messages like the Simpsons especially in 2016 to 2020 and people say that lame excuse “it’s just a cartoon” when the message sucks and “it’s really telling a message” when it aligns with thier own beliefs. Basically flat and not able to be a good thing either.
I used to like family guy but since 2015 or so the writers have come down with a severe bout of TDS. All we hear now is political whining and crying about certain news personalities. It’s lazy writing and completely uninspired. I only tolerate it because it’s something I can turn off my brain and watch it.
While I enjoy American Dad far more due to the consistency, toned down humor, writing and general moments (and some old songs used that really hit the spot at that particular scene), I always liked to watch Family Guy for the offensive jokes and boundry pushing they did. Yes, some jokes may be a bit too far, but honestly there’s both way worse out there and if you turn off your brain, it’s not half bad sometimes
The reason that I still will watch Family Guy (especially if I’m, say, travelling and I want to watch something on the hotel TV) is that it’s cartoon fast food: if I just want a dumb cartoon with which I know I can get few quick chuckles in and turn off my brain to, then Family Guy is great for a 2-episode evening watch. Not every show can (nor should) be “pinnacle fine-crafted comedy and storytelling” just like not every restaurant can (nor should) focus on 3-star Michelin food. Someone’s gotta serve Mc’Ds. Family Guy just happens to be the fast food of animation: quick, easy, simple, not-complicated humor that doesn’t demand much from me, and serves it up consistently again and again without variation. I can turn on any random episode of Family Guy, and no matter what episode it is or what season it came from, I know what to expect. And that’s part of the reason I like it and go back to it. “Always Sunny” is wildly different across seasons, but the nice part about Family Guy is that it serves you the same tried-and-true easy-dumb-gag Family Guy formula every single time.
honestly, Terifteriq articles on Family guy really changed my opinion on the show itself. his analysis really helped me to be more forgiven of Family Guy. I still think the show is lazy, and the way they constantly punch down topics and groups, without making a single relevant point on it, and even make jokes that are, impossible to laugh for how upsetting they are, really make my blood boil with anger. but is not as bad as many say it is. when Family guy does it right, they fucking do it right. and Seth is an amazing creator and he does look like a sweetheart.

Something I’ve noticed about Family Guy is it doesn’t have confidence in its own jokes to land so it feels the need to have the characters explain the joke as it’s happening. And another problem is the characters are so heinous that any attempt at an actual heartfelt moment just feels completely artificial. Like, why should I feel nice if Lois and Meg have a bonding moment in one episode when I’ve literally seen Lois tell Meg she should just kill herself because she’s ugly? Compare it to the much better show BoJack Horseman. Both have a main character who is a thoughtless jerk but in BoJack Horseman, his actions have real consequences. The people he hurts remember what he did after the episode’s runtime is over, and when he learns his lesson it’s the result of serious introspection and hard work to become better. In Family Guy it doesn’t matter how bad the thing Peter did because in the final minute of the episode he’ll deliver some generic apology and everyone will forgive him, and then the next episode it will be like nothing ever happened.
Damn, those were the days, Animation Domination on Fox, having an amazing line up of good animated shows, The Simpsons, king of the hill, Futurama and hell, even Family Guy. I would tune in every Sunday for the newest episode, what the hell happened? Now Fox is just bleh. I haven’t tuned in for decades!! And I’m not even interested anymore.
People need to remember its not real and in some cases so far from reality its unimaginable. Thats part of what makes the crudeness of all the jokes so funny. If you don’t like it you don’t have to watch it but that doesn’t mean it deserves to be off the air, it also doesn’t make their writers nasty people. Its just different humour.
I got stuck on Family Guy in the Adult Swim/DVD era. It was that college stoner thing that was great at the time. Though my parents really liked it, too. It was on everywhere. TBS through the day, adult swim at night. I never really grew to “hate” the show, it just got old, I guess. South Park though, that’s one I was with from the very start. Even if there were chunks of episodes I missed, I was always happy to go back to them eventually. It just doesn’t get old to me the way Family Guy did. Haven’t watched a FG episode in years now.
People are actually offended by this garbage show? There is literally nothing of substance happening, half of the episodes are just mindless cutaway gags, some being lazy attempts at stretching the episode unnecessarily. Like an animation on loop or a still image being shown. That’s what the truly insulting part is, they literally waste the audience’s time with nonsense.
Family Guy is nothing more than background noise now. The show doesn’t even have a plot or story. The best way to enjoy the show is to watch clips or compilations on Youtube because that is all the show is. It just really pisses me off how every adult cartoon in the US has to be a Family Guy clone while kids’ cartoons are the only cartoons that have good storytelling.
I can kind of see the reasons for the hate, but I honestly think it’s pretty good. It’s weak at storytelling, but the jokes are funny and it has alot of great moments. It’s not really an amazing masterpiece or whatever, and I wouldn’t recommend perusal every episode, but it is a show that you can just put on every now and then and be entertained, and I think that’s fine.
Reasons I hate family guy: 1) the characters personalities change like the wind. They just make them have whatever personality they want to fit the joke in that moment 2) the family is so cruel to one another and it makes it difficult to watch 3) over use of gore and offensive jokes as “humor.” I can enjoy dark humor, I enjoy Rick and Morty and shows like that, but it straight up feels like they think being offensive is a joke of it’s own, and it’s not 4) they make fun of shows wayyy better then there’s 5) the episode where Stevie is pregnant is a reason if it’s own.
Easiest answer, the humor was always juvenile and cringe to many. There wasn’t any sense of irony, awareness, intelligence like the early Simpsons HAD. In terms of shock humor south park did it better, in terms of cultural references the Simpsons did it better, and Futurama did basically everything better. For myself and alot of others Seth MacFarlane’s sense of humor just isn’t funny

South Park & Family Guy are both rated TV-MA, although both shows also get a TV-14 rating for the edited versions of many of their episodes. They also share many similarities like dark humor, excessive language, crude sexual content, and graphic violence. Both shows also have a few differences. For example, Family guy also does cutaway gags while South Park does not.
The Simpsons shows Americans with a more realistic level of crassness in order to tell better and funnier stories, Family Guy was just trying to be more crass for the hell of it. Shock humor. That’s why it declined it got a bad rep, because most people who liked it for the shock humor and novel style quickly got tired of it and its obvious formula.
Family Guy used to be my favorite show and I liked it about up to Season 11. I wouldn’t say the jokes in the earlier seasons has aged well, but I never minded the cutaway gags because I’m a fan of random and absurd humor, which is how I saw them. I can’t pinpoint exactly what’s lacking from the latter seasons, but I haven’t found it funny in years whereas American Dad! is absolute gold. I was worried AD was falling by the wayside around Season 8 or whatever season had the hot tub episode, but it got back on track pretty quickly. I feel like AD makes better use of its characters’ and their idiosyncrasies.
There are three shows in my hall of fame, The (old) Simpsons, the office (s2-7) and family guy (everything before 2012) Theres not a single animated show that can make a show as funny and as sad as Family Guy. Take for example the episode where Brian dies. I cried AND I WATCHED THAT FULLY GROWN… its so touching. Or an even better example: Brian and stewie (Idk what season)… one of the best episodes of any show at all. Just those 2 in a room, no other people, no other sets. Name one show thats capable of doing this
The only issue family and other animated adult shows are facing is the fact the audience becomes softer as the decades go by. They become softer and more fragile and want to play the victim more and more making them look edgy or dark when they’re just using normal humor. Family guy at one point told smart engaging stories had witty and sharp humor and felt like when the characters where horrible people there was consequences to their actions nowadays their shitty personalities are just played for laughs the jokes just feel mean spirited all the characters are 1 dimensional the list could go on the modern season have their gems but they are few and far between but to say family guy is the worst animated show on tv is stretching it.
Family Guy is a show watched mostly by Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers because they’re the ones who actually get the references with in pop culture more times then not. That’s how teenagers are. And I think people need to start looking at that way. It was a show we all loved around that time in our lives, are great out of it. So really, Family Guy will never run out of an audience because it was always have teenagers who think show is amazing for a few years, before growing out of it and moving on.

The problem with family Guy is is that the first three or four seasons are amazing, but there’s only so many jokes you can do in that particular formula of comedy before it becomes a total shit show. The worst and most dangerous episode was the one alluding to Michael’s Hutchence’s suicide as being a sex game gone wrong. It should be removed and the show’s creators should apologize. It is very dangerous for people to call an obvious act of suicide something that may not kill & may give someone a thrill. Kids look this stuff up and may try to do what Michael did and die. Michael’s death was confirmed suicide repeatedly, including by famed coroner Dr. Shepherd who did a reenactment of his suicide (google DailyMail – ‘This was not a sex game gone wrong:’ Pathologist who recreated Michael Hutchence’s death…”) The police said, “There were no sex games. It was 100 per cent suicide.” And no way was it murder because no one could get in or out of the room. Erotic aphxiation involves kneeling with something lose or a release mechanism that is expected to come undone when someone is unconscious. (and it still often leads to death or permanent brain damage!! – Don’t do it) Michael did not do this. He hung himself from up high using a belt as a noose and facing to door. He expected to die and did. In the HORRIBLE family guy episode, they show Brian with a belt TIGHTLY buckled around his neck – which of course would never automatically release when he’d fall unconscious. Stewie jokes he’s pullling a Michael hutchence and implies its a sex game. For the record – a tightly tied or buckled anything, that will stay tight when the person passes out, is another form of suicide – not a sex game.
Never really liked Family Guy, but American Dad was a great show. Then again, I also liked Futurama more than The Simpsons. Just like American Dad, Futurama just had better stories that could get really emotional and sad, but without being overly dramatic. Like that one episode with the lucky clover.
I like Family guy but I would’ve loved it as much as I do The Simpsons or South park if there were much less cutaways, and episodes that only focus on one plot and not a side plot which has nothing to do with the main plot which is the problem I have with it. And if it was basically like a vulgar but also different type of Simpsons show with more wholesome moments would make it into my top 3 favorite shows, though American dad seems better because it barely has any cutaways and a better sense of humor.

Joe has gone from macho to a “sad cripple” whose wife hates him for his disability, Quagmire has from just a womanizer to a literal rapist and child molester, Brian has gone from voice of reason to douchey narcissistic puedo intellectual scumbag, Stewie from evil genius to source of gay jokes, Chris from lovable teenage oaf to socially awkward creep and pervert, Lois from loving housewife and mother to miserable middle aged woman who hates her family, and Meg’s always been the punching bag but now they’ve upped her actual grossness as if to justify the abuse she endures. Peter is the absolute worst; he WAS the lovable TV dad who truly cared about his family to a reckless, immature, destructive, misogynistic, inconsiderate moron. These are not the same characters we grew up with.
Really the majority of why Family Guy isn’t as well liked as it used to be is because of the major dip in quality and just being lazy in its vulgar humor and writing. Like its been stated, Fox sees this show as their bread and butter so the writers dont see much reason to put in the effort since they’re just going to keeo keeo gettinf renewed.
Family guys jokes hit harder than south Park and even Simpsons. Every day going about my regular life a family joke will come up just because of the situation I’m in and it makes day to Day life so funny. Their jokes hit over and over and never really stop being funny. To call that lazy writing and bad joke telling is honestly jealousy imo. It’s one thing to tell a good funny joke with story telling. It’s another to tell a quick joke that makes you laugh the rest of your life. I’d rather the latter.
Wait, so South Park creators disagree with how family guy writers come up with their jokes and incorporate them into their show, so they decide to write a really shitty episode that draws on two popular shows to pad the runtime of the episode. The logic there doesn’t quite span the gap, how can you have an issue with the way someone writes, to go and do damn near the same thing? That’s like if someone is protesting and you don’t like it, so you protest them protesting, making you a hypocrite.
I used to love it. I grew up perusal Married With Children. So dysfunctional family sitcoms were a big deal to me. Though I noticed there weren’t any lessons in Family Guy about family so I stopped perusal. I still watch American Dad. It offers more than just the humor. For me, I’m a huge fan of animation. One thing I still love to watch is the chicken fights. Lots of love went into the references in each action movie, and I love every second and every frame of each.
Family Guy seasons 1 – 7 were actually quite good. Witty, emotional, beautiful animation at times, and was just funny with certain good messages attached within. Seasons 8 – 12 were also quite good for different reasons. Unfortunately, Family Guy certainly lost its mojo and now is just a joke of what it used to be. So sad. I hope Family Guy can return to what it once was.
Family Guy is a show that was meant to aim towards more views from teenagers than adults cause they know that the minds of the kids will find their jokes funny while adult minds will find it unfunny and extremely offensive. Season 1, 2, and partials of 3 of family guy were good until they made Peter a menace to society, having him appear in cutaways/scenes that’s totally unnecessary, Peter doing things that are absolutely dangerous that can get his family killed which are not funny, Lois becoming more neglectful towards her family, Chris becoming just like Peter, and Meg being the punching bag of the show. The only characters I’ve seen improved were Brian and Stewie; after seeing the episode Road to the Multiverse being a big hit and success, that right there could’ve gave them their own show. Although it would be a spin-off, but in my mind without a doubt, would be a better show than Family Guy.
I 100% agree with this article because I have talked to my friend about family guy having a spiral downfall for years. And then when I officially started perusal American dad in my freshman year of high school I started having a addiction with there comedy. The one thing I did not like about family guy the most is there cutaway gags and that has been one of those annoying gags in my opinion in animation TV history.
I just find their lack of story telling ability the worst part. King of the hill,simpsons and esecially futurama…..weaved really great,interrsting and even heart felt stories. Family guy for me is too sporratic . I think the people that make it are very funny and talented but all of the cut scenes to jokes are lazy setups for funny concepts.
I really like family guy because it pushes boundaries. Comedy should include everyone, no matter if they are ill or something. It’s really refreshing to see a show that doesn’t try to do stuff because it might “offend” people. Grow up. It’s comedy,not real life,if you can’t take a joke don’t watch it.
Early Family Guy imo was funny when it was alot of 80s references. After awhile…. yeesh it got old really fast. The Simpsons had a much longer run of Golden Years 1990s ish to 98-99. South Park early wasn’t very good with the bad animation and voices not quite right yet. Still had great episodes, but its mid and late content has stay very strong, i don’t like everyone but when its on point, nothing better.
The last maybe 4 seasons are unwatchable. The humor is gone and their material is stodgy and vapid. Plus Seth insists on injecting his Hollywood politics into it and it just doesn’t work. South Park can do it because they don’t take a side, but Seth has TDS and he loves to let the audience know. RIP Family Guy.

Structure does not equal content and superficial similarities do not make two things the same or even „similar”. Coconuts and Bananas also have „a lot” (superficially) in common but they are obviously very different from each other. Yes they both do crude humor and boundary-pushing and silly jokes, but for Family Guy, that is more or less the sum of what it‘s about (creating funny jokes) whereas for South Park, the jokes are very frequently and very crucially a vehicle for something else. Even though the early Seasons were often much more basic and random, I remember one of the first episodes South Park did was about Stan finding out that his dog, Sparky, is gay, and after initially being upset by this Stan has to learn that being gay is ok and normal. This was one of their first episodes that aired in 1997, when this was definitely still a controversial topic. South Park also takes a any number of positions that are definitely wrong, but one thing that stands out is that they constantly deride the status quo and South Park takes aim at who they consider to be the rich and powerful. Like Mel Gibson, who they kind of correctly judged to be an asshole making antisemitic propaganda. In the early 2000s that was not something a „normal” show would have been doing. When it comes to offensive humor, the question is always „offensive to whom”. Normal shows like „the Simpsons” have rich and powerful people as guest stars voicing themselves, essentially giving them a platform.
one part that has always been good about family guy was some of the metahumor. like, not all of it, but stuff like that random throwaway gag of peter saying he’s “real life pregnant” and can’t be in the episode’s plot, which i think is comparable to the episode where chris was replaced with an elephant as a foreign exchange student. and of course, the other redeeming part of modern family guy is most definitely stewie. he’s the only character that i’d argue has more personality and better personality after seasons 1-3 out of the main cast.
I think there’s something missed out with the South Park Cartoon Wars lampooning. The point of it was, yes, they don’t like Family Guy, but they find the idea of cancelling Family Guy and turning on people for liking it hypocritical, especially since they know their show is as liable to scorn as well. Cartman is treated as the VILLAIN of the episode for trying to get Family Guy cancelled, it’s actually pretty damn ham fisted about it. A character straight up protests; “A lot of people LIKE Family Guy too! Who are YOU to decide it shouldn’t be on the air?!” with the POV shot even making it look like he’s berating the viewer.
I used to watch all simpsons, south park and family guy episodes. But stopped probably like 5-6 years ago. I still plan to catch up but not as interested and just got busier. Those shows will always hold a special place in my heart. And i still pop em on once in a while. Good background shows 😅 I just started perusal ted, and so far, it is really good. Reminds me a bit of old family guy.
I am glad that you recognize american dad as the better of family guy because many don’t understand that the two are different. Family guy needs cutaways, but american dad makes funny episodes or moments because they built context, or its just funny in the moment. The best time to say it’s funny in the moment is when Principal lewis does a wrestling move on Steve, and Barry yells noooooo.
Lately Family Guy gives me the same vibe as those tik tok and yt shorts articles where they play with slime or kinetic sand as a quick and brainless way to generate entertainment. Maybe because both cases are formulaic and so simple that you don’t need any mental effort to watch them, quite the opposite. I remember the day I stopped perusal everything created by Seth MacFarlane. It was back when Hulu was free. They had ‘Family Guy’, ‘American Dad’ and ‘ALF’. So one day I decided to watch 2 episodes of each show before moving on and I kept this up for several days. To be honest, this was one of the funnest things I’ve ever done, but that stopped when I watched an episode of ALF. During this episode ALF messed up, got kicked out of the house. He begged his way back in, dressed up in a suit and did everything perfectly, but messed up at the end. Then I watched an episode of ‘American Dad’ and during this episode Roger messed up, got kicked out of the house. He begged his way back in, dressed up in a suit and almost did everything perfectly, but had to mess up at the end. I felt like ‘American Dad’ ripped off ALF so I went to the ALF website and complained. They told me if I didn’t like it I shouldn’t watch. So I stopped perusal and haven’t really watched it since.
I think the reason family guy has gone down hill over the many years is that Seth McFarland is and has been trying to get that show canceled for a long time. I remember reading an article about how he hated doing that show, but for whatever reason, I can’t remember, he is contractually obligated to continuing make more episodes.
I’m not gonna lie, the biggest problem is how the characters are now… They’ve went from a believable and likeable family to just… Horrible people… Brian went from the most genuine character to being a horrible pervert, Lois went from a wellmeaning mother to a terrible wife who constantly cheats on Peter, Stewie… Well, Stewie’s actually kinda believable as a person sometimes now… And Chris has been heavily implied to be incestuous multiple times, Meg is a punching bag who everyone just hates and wishes was dead, and Peter’s went from a loveable idiot to a mass murderer who has killed hundreds, thousands, or maybe even millions!… And that’s only the main family…
I personally don’t like how often they obsess over random celebrities then pull to random cutaways. Personally I don’t care at all about celebrities so I don’t understand any of their random critiques or jokes. Their show can’t exist on its own with its own characters and narrative without pulling from some comments on celebrities. South park talks about celebrities too but nowhere near the same level
The differences between South Park and Family Guy, mainly, for me, is how they balance things between realism and unrealistic themes. Like how South Park has realistic animals while Family Guy has anthropomorphic animals and adult-minded babies and one-year-olds. Both contribute their own sources of un-realism and sometimes the less realistic fiction is the better, so I would say a good job on both parts. Another big difference is that the two shows have is that Kenny is always “dying” and other characters are almost always permanently dead while with Family Guy characters and one-off people can be resurrected from ways of means at any given time. Both shows have both their pros and their cons in my honest opinion, and I think the reason why Parker and Matt had it so much is just because of cutaways and feelings that flashbacks and recounting memories a lot is just another way to save time from the show and takes away things from the overall plot of the episode. The real reason why the two shows have been compared to each other is because they are both animated adult shows based on satire, then but again, so is The Simpsons, though the Tracey Ullman shorts were originally more wholesome and family-friendly, but that’s neither here nor there. American Dad! has been dubbed too similar to Family Guy but they don’t have super-unrealistic shock humor and save-time cutaways like Family Guy does, which makes the similarity claims mostly a bunch of bull anyway, same as Futurama having characters with regular Caucasian skin colors or realistic Caucasian skin tones unlike The Simpsons.
I feel like the offensive stuff is a low bar of criticism. American dad, South Park and the Simpsons have done those jokes too. One of which being offensive to a religion that resulted in Trey Parker and Matt Stone receiving death threats. Kinda like looking for reasons a show sucks. But it is bland as humor and it almost feels like they don’t know who their target audience is anymore. They had a whole episode about millennials which feels like one big boomer joke.
My favourite character in this show is Cleveland. One of the reasons why is one of the first things he said on his show: “Nobody cares what Cleveland wants, but when Peter wants to… i am expected to follow no questions asked”. That is why I hate Family Guy. Most episodes of the series focuses on the Griffins. This shows has a colourful range of characters and they do nothing with them. They don’t give them more depth or character arks. They instead choose to make them more pathetic. I feel like the only character who’s had a good ark in this whole show is Cleveland. Peter is now a childish oaf, Brian is… you know, Joe is in a loveless marriage and feels like his life is a neverending pain, Meg is still a punching bag, Stewie is no longer evil ( i kinda like that) e.t.c… I think they have tried to give depth to Quagmire, but I don’t see it. This is why shows like The Simpsons, American Dad and Futurama are and I hope will be doing so well. They have a lot of material to use. Family Guy is using the same characters and jokes over and over again. How many times have they made fun of the JFK assassination or people of “other races”? I don’t know when did the awful “modern Family Guy” era started. For me, it went bad a long time ago.
All sitcom shows about family on FOX were kinda just The Simpsons like King of the Hill, Bordertown, Bless the Hearts, Duncanville and The PJs, but unique at the same time. Family Guy was perfect from seasons 1-6. Season 7 was when Family Guy lost its soul and magic and perfection. By Season 7-present there were only 2 and a half good episodes and the first two stories from Fan mail part two for the British segment and the Robin Williams one. The only good ones from season 7-present were Love Blactually, V is for Mystery, and the Stewie meeting Patrick Stewart plot from Not all dogs go to heaven, and the only good scene from Big man on Hippocampus was when Peter spied on Lois and claims he doesn’t know how to make love and Lois showed him how it was done.
there are truly so many things i don’t like about family guy, there are jokes that are harmful beyond words, disgust use as humor, lazy writing, lazy animation, but at the same time i do love it, i love what it means to me. What it felt like being a kid in 2008, i want to hate it but i can’t ever bring myself too. Even now there are moments from modern family guy that make me laugh, songs from the older episodes that are enjoyable it’s a weird nostalgia of knowing it’s so bad but loving it anyways

Family Guy….Family Guy Family Guy Family Guy. I like seasons 1-3 of this show where the characters were nice and acted like people, I think the first three seasons are genuinely good TV that being said, I never… cared for Family Guy. As season 4 and 5 went on you could feel something different, I believe the decline of the show began here, though not even close to bad these seasons start the flanderization of the characters, the overly mean personalities they would have going forward and the lazier jokes. I think 4 and 5 are good but think that after this this shouldn’t have moved on that much. Then we get into the true stepping stones seasons 6 and 7 where I stop liking the majority of the episodes, starting with season 8 the show starts taking huge leaps downward when it comes to quality and seasons 10-15 are some of the worst seasons of TV I’ve ever sat through. Even in the seasons I like I never really liked Family Guy a ton, cutaway gags are a lazy way to fill your episode with gags, I have no problem with cutaway gags but family Guy almost exclusively uses them. The characters are so awful, the show very very rarely has a good episode, its offensive for the sake of being offensive. There it is the reason I don’t like family Guy, well 3:51 all the reasons but the reason I can’t sit down to watch anything except for a handful of episodes after season 5 is the comedy, The early seasons were funny because they tried, after, they only use cutaways and I remember hearing Seth Macfarlane saying that it’s harder to come up with outlandish cutaways so his show is harder to write than The Simpsons but a pretty high amount of the cutaways are just clips from something that go on for 4 minutes.
Family Guy and South Park are my favorite animated shows ever. They are extemely different, but I love them both for what they are. Family Guy doesn’t need great writing imo, it’s funny as hell, very creative, has amazing VAs, the best musical pieces ever created and for me personally the best characters. I gotta be in the right mood for South Park, but Family Guy is something I put on at least once a week, absolute comfort show.
I really like family guy, mostly for the plot of certain episodes and the humour can be quite clever at times, however, the characters have become saturated and boring and the episode structure becomes repetitive after a while. Even the status quo of family guy has slowly changed in negative ways, such as Peter becoming more and more belligerent, Brian became much more politically aware, and stewie is now indifferent towards lois instead of hating her.
I checked out a little bit of modern and most of early family guy. I can say that modern family guys humour is FAR too on the noise and spells out everything with a megaphone while early family guy still had a good chunk of subtlety. Smiling friends is so much better than than family guy in every way along with the other family guy clones that litter adult comedy
