I was very surprised at Parker and Stone’s unprovoked attack on Family Guy. Since when do currently airing shows attack their colleagues, or competition? Rather arrogant. I watched years of South Park, starting with the first episode, and Parker and Stone seemed to be acting like the kind of celebrities they made fun of.
Family guy is great when you have all the episodes already in your library and you can pick and choose your favourite episodes. However if you were ever kidnapped and forced to watch Family guy from season 1 right through to season 21 or whatever I think you would be beginning your kidnappers to kill you.
The first 3 seasons, excellent. Season 4 onwards, absolutely trash. Relying too much on references to mostly 1980s films, tropes, music, the way Meg is suddenly treated horrible, the way Lois’ voice becomes INCREDIBLY annoying, and the fact that you can see it’s not drawn by hand anymore. It looked better the old way and Lois’ voice was more sexy. Spongebob suffered the same way. After the movie (really, as of), Spongebob sounded very annoying, Patrick dumber than ever, and Sandy… a scientist, for some reason? They just change the way main characters sound so much by making them sound more annoying, act more stupid and generally just behave not like they did prior and this applies both to Family Guy and modern spongebob (2005 onwards, for both)
A big factor for me is how lazy the animation is. Most side characters are just the same body models with different heads slapped on, the same camera angles, and the same flat shading. Their only actual technique seems to be the dramatic slow zoom in thats used to make you “feel something” literally moments after a cutaway gag had the characters vomiting for 5 straight minutes. Maybe if the writing was good or the art was enjoyable one then would stand out, but it’s just not the case. And then you have the utter glut of family guy clones that rip the artstyle and humor off, but do it worse, that have heavily tarnished the shows legacy. If family guy existed in a vacuum you might could argue it’s kept a sort of quality, but there are so many better shows out there that tell similar stories without treating their audiences like children.
You forgot one more reason people hate it that isn’t often brought up, but is a HUGE ire for many animators: it’s lazy and poor animation quality. Characters are basically expressionless when they move e.g., they barely blink, they stand ramrod stiff, they keep the same facial expression, etc. Compare this with other animated shows like Simpsons, King Of The Hill and Spongebob, where the characters actually move, gesture, blink and show expression. Family Guy avoids doing this because it contributes to the animation budget, and they want to keep it as low as possible. They also recycle their animations, such as their falling down or death animations. Now, this would be a perfectly fine excuse if it was a brand new show or one with a low budget, but Family Guy is a multimillion dollar show with thousands of dollars to spare. It’s simply just down to laziness. This is the major reason animators like John K and ESPECIALLY many YouTube/Flash animators hate the show. They’re out there pouring their sweat and blood into making their animations smooth and dynamic with what little money and resources they have; meanwhile, Family Guy, a show that has millions of dollars, is pissing away their budget on guest cameos and the license to Conway Twitty songs.
