My parents were supportive in the same way as your Mom and Dad. The first time I had taken my Mom to visit the new laboratory as a grad student she looked around and said “What’s new about this? I knew this is where you would be.” I earned my doctorate degree and she was so proud and not surprised!! 🥰 She spoke Spanish as did I and we learned English together. We lived in Harlem (140th St.) with my Grandmother for a while since Dad was overseas. Neil’s Mom was so right about NYC being a laboratory. Everything was there! Experiences galore. I went back to university a 40 and got my masters, I was the oldest in my class but it was a wonderful experience, it was tough in the first. The moment when she was with your sister in school and had the teacher asked child she was holding I can relate to 100%. I’m biracial and my mum is from Scotland so every school function when my mum had to come into the school it would always be the same thing. That was very late eighties and call throughout the nineties. As well I was raised by my grandmother and have a very close minded towards elderly people. I was looking forward to studying at Fordham University, 1980s but in my trying times, work schedule(at a Fordham Road Optical) was first, to pay rent, bills, care for my newborn son. Native Floridian, I went to a business tech college, MBI, the school was above my workplace. I didn’t go far at this college, two years. Work dominated my schedule.
I enjoyed your interview with your Mom (Moma Tyson) of ‘90+ years young🥰. She has a warm sense of humor and open minded demeanor. She is the same age as my deceased Mom. My parents were born and nurtured in the Deep South of MS. My Mom lost her mother at a young age of 9 years young. I will remember Her words of wisdom to “Do not hold regrets of the past, but get on with life and do the best you can in the here and now.🥰 GOD Bless
It’s beautiful, and your success is something we can all agree is guaranteed when your upbringing comes from the morally solid backgrounds of both parents. So, Neil was beyond privileged to have both parents educated but who also believed in free will thinking of a child to self-determination, which highly contributed to him being one of the greatest or brightest scientists of the 21st century. His mother is undoubtedly the kind of mother figure I would dream of having as a mom. Ms. Tyson is quite witty, which Neil took after; may God bless her soul!
Ha! My mom – born in ’26, also learned English mostly from the radio. My parents were 28 and 32 when they picked up the kids and moved to the US from Holland for better work opportunities. She’d listen to the radio in the background all day to learn as fast as possible. 10 years later, when I was a little kid, she sing to me – usually late 50s, early 60s jingles. Other kids grew up with their moms singing lullabies. I grew up with my mom singing, “You’ll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent”.
Somewhere I had read that your mother was from Puerto Rico, but today I found out that she was born in my hometown, Arecibo, which made me prouder. I knew some families who were named Feliciano in Arecibo, and I had an acquaintance (who must be around 84 now), which is my age, who was one of my best friends. His name is Pedro (Peyo) Feliciano and he moved to New York in the fifties, which was common in that space of time. Congratulations to Mrs. Suntita Feliciano. She speaks as a very intelligent and a great mother. God bless her.
“Get on with it” and “that’s the end of that” is what being influenced by people of the so-called “greatest” and “silent” generations looks like. I’m so grateful to have lived for most of my youngest years directly with my grandparents who are of those eras and lived very long (to 95-100 years old). Their wisdom now lives on in me, and in my parents, and in many others in my family. So much of this interview resonated directly with me, and it was comforting.
I truly did not know and most people in Puerto Rico don’t know that you are from Puerto Rican decent. Also what a coincidence that your mom is from Arecibo. Wow I have been a fan for many many years, this fact makes it even more dear to me and like many other Boricuas, should feel really proud. You belong into a distinguished cadre of Puerto Rican descendants that have given much back for which we are all in PR really proud. Neil, your mom is absolutely amazing. I’m sure you know that but I don’t even have words to express how amazing she is. You are blessed to have such a mother and I gather your father was equally amazing. The 🍎 does not fall far from the tree and for that you can thank your maker. Thank you so much and thank your mom so much for sharing with us. She is smart as a tack and that must make you feel hopeful for your older age that hopefully you too will retain your marbles😊 Ralph Nader is also 90 years old and I do wish that your mom and he would run for office and your mom would be president and he would be vice president in an ideal World.❤
This was a heart worming interview that touched my heart as well as took me down memory lane with my own parts. Neil know that you are a very blessed man to not only have your parent with you and to be of her age and still have the wit she had in her thirties with the wisdom of her true age. No wonder you are who you are. Now, Neil, don’t go getting the bighead thinking it’s because of your hard work because that hard work was directed by mama and popa. Lol. Blessings to you Neil…….
