Family Tree DNA is a tool that uses your DNA to create tabs for maternal and paternal matches. It phases your raw data into maternal and paternal values based on which side of the tree (myFamilytree) match is linked to. Once you have linked a maternal or paternal relative to the tree, it looks at that section of DNA you have entered. Family Matching does not populate based on relationships indicated by users but rather on the large amount of DNA shown between you and your half sister.

The feature allows users to enter the surnames of their maternal ancestors and their earliest known relative. Anyone on the father’s entire side of the tree is considered paternal, while anyone on the mother’s side is considered maternal. The line is drawn straight down the middle, with half of your ancestors on each side.

The Family Tree DNA tabs can be sorted by paternal or maternal side, but it is not as intuitive as other genealogy tools. The tabs for maternal and paternal matches only work if you have connected them to a Direct Maternal Line. X-DNA has limited ancestral paths, while mtDNA only has one, which can help trace deep ancestry of your mother’s line.

The Family Finder test traces all of your ancestral lines, different from our mitochondrial tests. After linking your known relatives on your tree, you can use the Family Matching feature to view confirmed maternal and paternal matches at a glance and separately.
