Rescued a Black Mouth Cur, which was mislabelled “Pitbull Mix”. He is 7 months old and is the smartest, most loving and loyal dog I’ve ever had (next to my Doberweilers from childhood). He is easy to train, great with kids and patient with the 2 month old biting puppy we also adopted. Very handsome as well. Great family dog.
5 weeks ago a stray dog was in our neighborhood in OH. and I didn’t want it hit so I followed it around with a lead and treats and an hour or so later I was able to put lead on and that was the beginning of my best friend, Bosco. We love our Black Mouth Cur. I can say though they are super protective of their owners and their property. She sits with us on the couch and watches TV. She also has to be right on you in the recliner while you have your morning coffee. She is sweet and loving. Our BMC darted out and back into the woods just off a country road near our house. She was, according to our vet, only 4 weeks old and weighed 6 lbs. We pulled over, and she jumped into my arms. While my husband spoke with neighbors at the Nonnah Weavery, near where we found her, she was a wild thing, all over the car and all over me. She was desperately thirsty and hungry. I managed to get water in the lid of my thermos. I thought, “This is the craziest puppy I’ve ever seen. I would never want a dog this wild!” But, as soon as she drank the water, she rewarded me by licking my face. Then she crawled up on my chest, stared into my eyes with those big brown eyes, and fell asleep, there on my chest. That was 6 months ago. Now she’s close to 50 lbs. She’s still crazy… Crazy happy, crazy to have fun! She’s so sweet, muscular, athletic, and adventurous! I’ve never felt a coat so soft. So smart. You’ll never sneak up on her, no matter how deep asleep she is, because she’s ever attentive. She keeps up with me to make sure I’m safe, even if I get up to go to the bathroom. If I go outside without her, you can hear her protesting, and she will not rest until I’m back inside and safe. One of the most challenging behaviors is her checking me all over when I return home, to make sure I’m still sound, strong, and uninjured as if I’m the wolf pack leader returning from a hunt. She tests my bones by “biting” me all over. I deal with this by reassuring her that I’m strong and well and by displaying strength and dominance in a loving way.

I ended up with a black mouth cur due to the shelter misidentifying her as a puppy. She’s the most hyper active, off the wall crazy dog I’ve ever seen. But when it comes to bed time, she LOVES to snuggle under the blanket and she always makes sure there is no gap. She is currently one year and 7 months old and weighs right around 70 pounds.
I discovered BMCs when I came across one that was a neglected surrender at the pound. She had mange and skin and bones. Clearly she had never been inside a house before and would only drink water if she could find a puddle outdoors. She was extremely distant with me for months but slowly as she understood I was her friend she began to blossom into one of the best dogs I have every had the pleasure of befriending. We got Keyna from a kennel after her original owner joined the Army. We were asked to foster her at first while the young man was going through boot camp. Turned out he never made it through boot camp and the kennel Veterinarian was a former Army colonel and retired. He would not give the dog back to the young man because he was homeless and had other issues. So we adopted Keyna. It is and was the best thing I could of ever done. Ahe is soo loyal and dedicated to our home. We habe 23 acres and cattle as well as two homes on the property. She is so protective. As a disabled veteran she makes foe the perfect companion and service dog. She warms my heart and just knowing she lobes me is so fantastic. She is always on watch. Absolutely the best dog ever.

My last shelter dog was lab-foxhound mix and he had the misfortune to stumble upon a coyote pack. He survived, but it was a hard-learned lesson. When I adopted my next shelter dog I worried about how he would do with coyotes. Well, he’s a Black Mouth Cur, and there was no need to worry about that. Hell would sooner freeze over than he would let a coyote hurt me or him.
Back in 1962 or 63 Santa gave me a 3-month old puppy. Since we didn’t have a fireplace, Santa dropped the puppy at my grandparent’s house. My parents were as surprised as I was when grandpa walked in with this gangly puppy. He was silent and paper-trained. Which was good because we had a harsh winter. He was so well trained that mom had to take newspapers out into the yard to re-train him to do his business outside. A couple weeks after we got him, he was excited about something and he let out a little “WOOF”. He was so surprised that he sat down on his haunches and looked shocked. From that day forward his name was Woof. He was smart, strong and my best friend. One night my mom was tickling me. Woof heard me laugh and he must have thought mom was hurting me. He jumped up and put his paws on my mom’s shoulders and gently backed her against a wall. Mom was 4’11″ and they were nose to nose. He kept his mouth closed, growled deep in his chest, and let mom know I belonged to him and he wouldn’t tolerate her “hurting” me. I hugged him and told him I was okay. I kissed mom. Woof licked mom and we were all friends again. A couple years later my grandpa was tickling my 6-year old brother and the child was laughing. Again, Woof got between them propped his paws on grandpa’s stomach and I hugged that dog and told him he was a good boy. Grandpa looked at me like I was nuts. But when we explained that he had done the same thing to my mom and it was an act of protection for his “kids”, all was forgiven.
My BMC, Penny, loves long walks and swimming. Very smart: as soon as I bring out her toothbrush she sits between my knees with her mouth open. She loves having her teeth cleaned. This is the best breed for somebody active and retired as they need plenty of activity, open spaces and adventure. Penny keeps me lighter and fitter, summer and winter we are out for out 2 hour hike each morning.
This was helpful. We just adopted a 4 month old puppy from the animal shelter. We were told she is a “lab mix” but she doesn’t look anything like a lab. While I am sure she is a mixed breed, she looks just like a black mouth cur with her coloring and build. We have younger kids and they are a bit scared by the way she plays. My Cur was the worst pup ever! But around 14 months she turned into a sweetheart. My family and friends love her. Phoebe has her own mind. For example she does not like to be picked up. I have a black mouth cur but I never known he is rare until now. My parents got him for me when I was 5 on Christmas in a Walmart parking lot in Arkansas I’m 14 now. The one thing we didn’t expect was how strong he would be when he was 1 or 2 we took him to a vet and the nurse freaked out because she put him on a chain to bath him and put a muzzle on and she left to grab shampoo and when she got back to him he had chewed through the muzzle and broke the chain but he wasn’t trying to hurt anyone because at that time he hated leashes
Our BMC sleeps like 90% of the time. He’ll play, run, whatever you like, then as soon as we’re done – zzzzzzz. But he’s been the best dog for our family, runs off coyotes and other mean critters. Loves my four kids, and will not tolerate anything threatening them. When they were little they’d jump on him, hang on his neck and pull his ears, and he just let them do it. Wants to be in the room with you every second of the day. Really doesn’t like it if we’re gone for too long, he’ll start to chew patches in his fur. He’s had ear infections in both ears over a decade of owning him. Doesn’t do a lot of tricks or anything, but an awesome companion. If I’m calm, he’s calm, just sitting at my feet. Could walk him without a leash if my neighborhood allowed it. 10/10 Absolutely would recommend.
My chickens got out one day. I thought for sure my Cur was going to kill them. He hearded them 1 at a time into a corner and held them down in his mouth and waited for me to get to them. He didn’t kill them or act aggressive. He just did it on his own. They are incredibly smart dogs. I won’t own anything else.

We rescued a black mouth cur couple of months ago. We already had a very well behaved Lhasa apso for 5 years now. She quickly started caring for him like a mom but took few days to trust us. Every bone was shaking whenever I took her in my car. Now she is so happy and started feeling she belong here. My 2 dogs are inseparable now. They get along so well now. I got one by chance. He was a puppy (still is), and was running around my town with no owner. He wandered onto my front porch. He was too young to let lose or to call animal services. My last dog was a buckskin colored Blackmouth Cur. Ringo was his name and his previous owner had Ringo and a pitbull. Both were males. They got into a fight and the pit was almost killed received over 200 stitches. It was critical to establish Alpha with him since he had tasted blood and little training. He took to training faster than any of my past incredible 4 legged family members. Ringos girlfriend turned out to be my neighbors miniture dachshund. It became a ritual every day around 6. The owner and his dachshund would come out to the culdisack and she would bark. Ringo would give a little whine, I woul put his leash on and to the street we went. If he did something she didnt approve of she would snap and although he wasn’t scared, she rulled. One sunny summer day it was time to go see his girl but all of a sudden we heard screams from the miniture that sounded like something was killing her. Although Ringo always waited for his leash, he didnt this time. Up the driveway he flew. A stray dog was jumping and growling trying to get the little dog as her owner was holding her up but getting scrathed up. Ringo raced over the hill and the dog caught a glimpse of a 100 pound killer comming towards him. Ringo grabbed his hind leg just as the dog was halfway over the neighbors chain link fence. Im certain that hurt for a few weeks. Ringo ran back to his shaken up girlfriend I guess thinking she would thank him. She was shaking all over and snapped at him. Me and the owner laughed and said thats the way it is in all relationships.
As you can see in my profile pic, i have a black mouth cur. His name is Robin because he is my sidekick. When I got him I thought he was a german shepard mix. A nice lady at the dog park told me he was a black mouth cur. I looked at pics on the internet and sure enough he is. Robin is so loyal and attentive. He’s smart and protective. I got him from a shelter. He chases his tail when he has anxiety or hasnt gotten enpugh exercise. I have a cat. Now for the most part they get along but there are times Robin trys to bully the cat. Sometimes they sleep together. He never hurts the cat. Also hes never been around kids, but when we are around them in public he seems curious about them. To many black mouth cur dogs end up Misslabled in shelters.
I was walking out of a gas station almost two years ago when I seen a vehicle open the back door and put a puppy in the road. I know it sounds unbelievable but it happened. I ran into on coming traffic and picked her up and brought her home. I . I thought she was a mutt, but she turned out to be the smartest most protective/loyal dog I’ve ever had. Full of energy that needs to be burned once a day. She can not stay cooped up In the house all day or she goes on a destructive tantrum. I saved this dog from traffic and it was a blessing in disguise. I called the police and reported the license plate number of the car that did this and about a month later they called me and told me I could keep her if I got her registered and vaccinated. Their excuse or reason for trying to kill this dog was it took to much effort to care for her and they couldn’t afford to feed her anymore. The shelters were at max occupancy with what the cop called “Pandemic Dogs” People can be so awful sometimes. Anyways I had to share how I found my blessing. I named her Puddles for what she left all over my house while I was house breaking her.
We rescue dogs and recently had to rescue one that was dumped after having puppies, we’ve learned that she is very awkward when playing(compared to my dogs) because my 60lb pitbull and 90lb Lab weren’t quite ready for her because they couldn’t tell if she was playing but after day 4 we are doing alot better. My wife just discovered her real breed and alot of this makes sense. My young Chiweenie is kinda the alpha and didn’t trust her so we were kinda weary on her temperament towards small dogs but she slept all night on the couch under my arm cuddling with her head on my shoulder and never moved until I got up. Which i assumed she needed it maybe because she was sad but she definitely melted our hearts and helped reassured us on how sweet of a girl she is. We are guessing between 2 and 4 years old so any extra help with this breed would be helpful because she’s going to a family with a 3 year old boy. TYIA
$700 I got my BMC for $125. She costs me about $250 a month on food, insurance and the normal medical expenses My last one was a total a total guard dog, my current one is scared of everything. I think she was abused. But she is so nice to other dogs and sleeps next to me every night. Both had super high energy, loved hiking and running. They have more energy then me. .
question we have BMC (Black Mouth Cur) that we got from a dog rescue company but there are seveal things we noticed about Nani….. On thing; I’m very laid back, but Nani is a big couch potato, she seems to enjoy laying around the house, only eating or drinking water. She also enjoys giong for rides, does not bark like the othe dogs, but sits in a corerner of theback seat lougning around. Then she will generally sit up from her bed, and in a regal pose she will jut wach what is giong in on the house. she does enjoy eating snacks. Nowever she seems to shy away from playing like the other dogs with her own toys, so what do I have????
Just adopted a 6 month old from a shelter but has not taken well to my 8 year old daughter. I see all of the wonderful traits she possesses but sadly I am looking into giving her back due to the aggression shown to my child. I wanted to give her a loving home but I won’t put anyone in my family at risk. I will be sad to see her go but it will be for the best!
I thought my Spike dog was an Akita boxer pitbull lab hound cause of a DNA test… I’ve been telling people he’s just a Spike dog/good boy… My girlfriend ( of 2 years) has now informed me my Spike dog ( of 4 years since 6 weeks old) has a whole wikipedia page describing his Spike dog tendencies. Lol I had no idea now my mom wants 5 more and my girlfriend does too. Beware. You will end up with 12 black mouth currs if you get 1 black mouth curr.
Maybe 20% of this article is relaying true information. Otherwise there’s more crap in this article than my sewer lines. For starters, the breed got its name from the INSIDE of their mouths being black NOT their muzzle. The roof of their mouth is black, don’t go thinking every dog with a mask is a BMC. Y’all want to learn the true information, go talk to the breeders. You can find the Ladners in Mississippi and the Howards in Alabama. Those folks will enlighten you. That’s the best piece of advice anyone can give you, because the internet doesn’t have but a few pieces of true information on these dogs. I can tell you right now, the people that made this article did no research and certainly didn’t talk to anyone. The breeders out there preserving these dogs will tell you the truth.
