Before perusal this, I really just thought of the Family Tree Maker software as my local backup of the information I gathered from the Ancestry website. Once or twice a week I’d open it up and sync and then close it again. Or, sometimes I’d leave it open to view my data while I researched online. You are really helping me to see that it is an important tool in it’s own right. Learning how to filter the data in there will be extremely helpful. For more than ten years, I have been using the filters in another software program to create descendant charts that I send to relatives. I believe a descendant chart of a family tree has more visual impact than a list of relatives and has more information than a pedigree chart. I am planning to put my family tree in FTM Mac 3. After perusal your article on filters, I have two questions: Can a descendant chart be created from the filtered information in FTM and more specifically can two cousins who are descendants of a great-great grandfather be shown in a descendant chart without showing any other cousins? When I send an email to a newly found cousin, this chart lets me show our relationship without the need of including any relatives other than the direct descendants of the great-great grandfather.
How for example could I highlight all people in FTM that fought in World War One or that died in industrial accidents? I have used Family Historian for six year after using FTM, because FTM’s custom query/filtering was weak to state the least and was impossible to flag particular individuals. Has it improved?
Using filters. What am I doing wrong? Is it possible to filter in anyone with a certain family name? For example, if I want all individuals named Wesson, the first filter is for “Name”. But when I use it, I get an error telling me the “Wesson” is not a valid date. Date? But I’m using “Name” from the drop down, it’s the first selection!

However, I’m not understanding why, when I create a list of people (‘filter in’) from all my individuals, with a description field of the Residence fact containing ‘230 N. 8th’ (the address of my great grandfather), I get one person who was living with him, but not my great grandfather. Also, if I just filter in ‘230’, the list is much smaller than it should be, as my grandfather also was living there (but I entered his residence in the description field as ‘230 North 8th’). Any thoughts as to why I might be retrieving fewer hits than I should get?
When I select “Descendants >” in the “Filter Individuals” windows, descendants related only by marriage are included in the right-hand list. How do I filter out those individuals related only by marriage? For instance: If I select descendants of my mother, how do I filter out my wife (without excluding her by name)?
Crista, I’m frustrated. I can follow all your instructions and filter in and out, but when I go to Publish a filtered Index of Individuals Report there is no NAME column. I only have Birth, Marriage, Death and Spouse columns. Is there a way to include that NAME column? I’m using Family Tree Maker 3 for MAC, Version 22.2.5.820.
